« on: December 28, 2007, 03:46:37 PM »
I am thinking real hard about getting a 92 FS, I have never shot one only handled one today in the store.

I do not like the sights on it can I buy after market adjustable sights?
is this a good handgun It is going to be a range gun, and as a home defense gun

what should I know about them before I get in to one both good and bad

the dealer is asking $650 + paperwork fees for a new in box blued one this a good price or should I look around

Rickyp,

You are right that the sights on these guns aren't the best. You can have aftermarket sights put on these guns but it will have to be done by a competent gunsmith. More than likely he/she will have to put a dovetail into the slide to accommodate any new sights. I think Beretta's are excellent handguns. I have to stake my life on it so I have to trust it. They do have a tendency to stove pipe on every once in a while, but it is not an everyday thing, but if you practice with it enough you can fix a stove pipe very quickly. You will have to make sure that you clean it every time you go to the range or shoot it though because they don't like to be dirty. Also I do believe you can find one for a bit cheaper than the $650 he is asking for. You might want to look around a bit or you can look them up at....www.gunbroker.com and see what they are going for on there.

I have a few of the 92fs.  I love them for plinking and shooting at the range.  I have mostly used the Winchester FMJ 100 rounds to the box range ammo from Wal-Mart (cheapest I have found).  When my kids go shooting it is not uncommon for them to go through 400 to 600 rounds through 2 or 3 of the 92FS.  Just after Christmas we went and they shot 400 rounds.  It was 32° and snow/rain mix, a miserable day out unless you have your kids and we are all shooting.  Everything got wet for about 3 to 4 hours, and then another couple of hours before they got cleaned.  Out of all of those rounds not a single misfire or jam.  Cleaning was fairly simple afterward.   They are a good reliable firearm even if they are not the most compact.  As far as the sights are concerned, either you can get to know where your weapon is hitting or replace the sights.  Two of my kids are very accurate with their own 92FS but have a hard time when using one of the other ones until they have shot a couple of magazines.

I had a 92 and traded for the 96 i wish i had not traded it because of the price of ammo this gun was also a military contract pistol and is still being used in Iraqi parts are of plenty and they have many safety features. yeah my 92 stove piped when it was really dirty  meaning over 600 rounds without cleaning or i shot aluminum case ammunition if you do not clean your gun soon affter using it the ss version is a great choice .

I bought the conversion kit from CDNN for my 92 to make it a 96.  It was easy as changing the slide and magazine.  The only problem I had was that the safety didn't work on the 96.  I had the conversion longer than the 30 or 60 day return policy of CDNN before I tried it, so I just kept it.  I have only shot about a half box of the .40S&W out of it, no problems.  It is nice to know that I can use a heavier caliber if I want to and use the cheaper ammo for practice.

How much did that conversion kit run you anyways? I didn't know they had such a thing. It would be kind of nice to have.

I got it a couple of years ago and it was about $160.  I just looked at their website and didn't find it.  I know I saw it there about 4 months ago, which was the last time I was on their website.

www.cdnninvestments.com

I believe it was listed under gun parts.  This appears to be a used slide/barrel and magazine from a 96.  Check their website from time to time.  I know I have seen them and then they run out of them.

Cool I will have to check it out from time to time and see if I can catch in on there. I will also keep an eye on gunbroker just in case someone puts one on there.

I have a military surplus 92FS, and it's one of the best handguns I've owned. To be honest, when the military switched to the M9, I was skeptical about it. Now that I know more about it, I'm hooked. Nothing against its predecessor, mind you!

Have you thought about a used 92? Me, I got mine for $300, and it is in very good shape.

I am looking at 28 of them right now, that's all we have left. My Department carried 92Fs for 8 years and switched over to Sig P226s in .357 Sig in 2003. When we switched over, our officers were given the opportunity to purchase THEIR duty weapon, some chose not too, mostly because they were detectives and had 2 pistols issued to them and they bought their Sig P239s instead. In 8 years we only had 2 go down for problems, and that was the same with both pistols. The lever inside the pistol that allowed the decocker to drop the hammer broke off. It was made out of some type of cast piece of metal. We carried Federal 115 gr. +P+ Hi-Shok and shot approx. 60 rounds a year through each weapon to qualify and approx. 3-400 rounds each for practice. At one time our inventory was 125 92Fs. I would not have a problem staking my life on a 92F again if I had to. We had very few jams. The ones we had I can attribute to the reloads we were using back then and the gun being a little dirty. Full power ammo, I don't care how dirty it was, it would still function. Pair this pistol with a decent round and I don't think you could go wrong.

I used to work with a gun rental range. The model 92 would eat 50,000 rounds a week without a jam. No sig, glock, or any semi-auto could compete, Hands Down! Only equal was the revolvers.
