I'm planning a wolf hunt here in alberta this coming winter and was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions, on calls and rifle/caliber? This spring I was able to call in a nice grey with a Burnham bros. diaphram, and the "trumpet" end of an Ed Screecy coyote howler. it took some pactice but by the time i got out to the woods it sounded pretty good to me and apparently to the wolves as i got a response right away.
I was carring my 338 win mag for black bears and have been wondering if this is really TO MUCH !! for wolves( if there is such a thing as to much gun)I've worked up a load using 180gr Nosler Ballistic tips at about 3000fps and a 265 yd zero and a point blank range of of approx. 300yds my main concern is pelt damage, so my other choices are my 22-250, 30-06,or my 6.5x55 swed. I was thinking of trying to find a .243 win or a 6mm rem or 6mmPPC anyway let me hear what you all think.

Hillbilly : The last time I was in Canada bear hunting and saw some of the timber wolfs I was glad I had plenty of gun, I could be just a little too cautious however I would make sure the gun I was going to use was one I had plenty of confidence with both in accuracy and caliber for the job.

Hillbilly, Even though we dont like to admit it there is a thing as "too much gun", and with the .338+ballistis tips, i would imagine there is gonna be a nice size hole in the pelt... I wouldnt think u would need all that gun on a wolf, but its up to u...wut (jhm) said was true, you can never be too cautious when your hunting.

I have seen only two wolves, and I would carry something with just a little less knock down power than a .50 BMG. heh heh. I have heard stories from my grandfather-in-law about having to shoot wolves a few times with his .30-06 with all center mass shots.

Your 22.250 is enough gun to kill wolves. Use a 52 to 55 grain bullet, chest shot,dead dog. The 338 will probably kill them also :eek: But how dead is dead? If you want the hide, the 22 250 is fine. I call predators and use a 223, 22 250, 220 Swift up to bears, then I use a 25 06. No fur damage and dead targets. Even the 243 is usually not fur friendly. 243 and 25 06 are lethal at extended ranges and I use them for predator control when the fur is not an issue.

Fellas over the weekend I did some work on a load i had worked up last winter for my 30-06 using sabots from a company in Utah. I was getting about 3600fps and decent accuracy at about 1.5-2.5 inches at 100yds using a 55gr sp. so I was wondering if maybe a slightly heavier bullert maybe in the 60-70gr range would suffice.my concern is a wolf i saw shot in the rockies three years ago looked to wieght in at about 275lbs, and as a guide for big game (moose, muley's and whitetail) I would consider any thing under .264/6.5 minimal for animals that size. solet me know what you think of this idea, I was also pondering the idea of the 30-06 with 110-125gr bullets somthing such as a V-max, Blitz King, or Ballistic tip.
