max load pressure for 45-70 guide gun
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:18:21 AM »
I am reloading for my guide gun and am wondering what the max pressure that these guns can handle is, I have found the following info:

- modern reloading by lee - max load pressure 28,000 cup for lever guns
- lyman - 48th edition - max load pressure 28,000 cup for lever guns
- hodgdon powder company website - 40,000 cup for lever guns, 28,000 for trapdoor guns

the hodgdon site shows faster loads for the lever guns than the manuals show for ruger #1's.  Are the manuals being conservative or is Hodgdon out to lunch?  I would like to run the hotter loads through my guide gun but don't want problems.

Hornady also uses 40kcup for the 1895 limit.

I'm not sure why you would want to press the limits of a lever action. If you need more power than a mid-range 45/70, maybe there's a 460 Weatherby or a .458 Lott in your future.  ;D Most reloading manuals divide the 45/70 into three categories - trapdoor, lever guns, and the Ruger #1. I have Guide guns in 44 Mag and 45/70 and I certainly wouldn't approach the Ruger #1 loads in my Marlin. Common sense will need to prevail here.

I want to built some loads that are faster than the factory loads available at my local stores (mostly 300 gr at about 1800 fps) and looking at the garrett loads (35,000 cup) and the info on the Hodgdon site and thought I would ask if anyone else has any insight on if the info is correct, mostly I have been loading 405 gr cast bullets at lower pressures and velocities (1200-1600fps) for plinking but would like more powerful loads for both hunting and bear protection while on remote fishing trips and in the backcountry.  Specifically I am looking at loading some 350 gr round nose for hunting and 500 gr solids for bear protection.

Buffalo Bore also has levergun ammo that's considably hotter than trapdoor loads, all safe in 1895s made since 1972.

As does Conley.. http://www.cpcartridge.com/marlinwarning.htm

And the Garrett ammo of course...

If you want some home grown loads, try the Beartooth 535gr Piledriver!! :o

It is well established in the literature that the safe operating pressure of the Marlin 1895 45-70 is 40,000 CUP.  If shooting such loads in the Marlin 1895G I would recommend replacing the "brick" stock recoil pad with a Pachmayr prefit.

The 500 grain solids are a hoot! I loaded some 500 grain Barnes solids just for fun (I don't have any big bears around here), and the recoil is "stout" to say the least. I loaded 20 and still have 14 of them left. I replaced the factory recoil pad on mine with a fitted Limbsaver pad. I had to fill the factory screw holes and redrill them, but it is very effective and it looks good too.

Thanks for the info, I am going to work my way up to some hotter loads, probably try and stay under 35,000 just to be safe but it will be fun trying them out.  I have been thinking about getting abetter recoil pad as well but getting stuff shipped to Canada is a real problem.  I want a wild west trigger and longer tube mag but can get them here and can't get them shipped.
