My Glock let me down today!
« on: December 30, 2007, 12:48:02 PM »
There I was on the second stage of an IDPA match this morning. Everything was going great till the "Load & Make Ready" command. I inserted a mag and cycled the slide, holstered and waited for the buzzer. On the buzzer I made one of my lightning fast draws  ;D and pressed the trigger as the sights aligned----------------and nothing happened! Quick tap, rack, press, nothing. Same for the second tap, rack, press! I cleared the weapon and retreated to a safe area for a quick inspection. Pulled my tool kit out of the range bag, and the punch that I ALLWAYS carry is gone!! Fortunately I had a set of allen wrenches with me that sufficed as a punch. A quick inspection revealed what I suspected, a broken trigger spring. As I had no spare parts, or the extra Glock I usually carry, I had to use my Pro Carry to finish the match. I learned two things today! Always have spare parts for the ones most likely to fail, and always be sure to have the proper tools in your range bag!! It only took me a couple of minutes to replace it now that I'm home. If I had parts and tools in my range bag I could have had the gun back up and running before the squad finished the second stage. Guess I just take the Glocks for granted as they rarely break!

From what I have read, broken trigger springs are fairly common, but the gun will continue to fire as normal until slidelock.  If you hold the trigger back and manually cycle the slide, the trigger will reset and the gun will fire normally until your next mag change.  Some folks change to a NY1 trigger spring for reliability.  The NY1 spring is compressed as the trigger is pulled as opposed to being stretched like the S shaped stock spring.  The NY1 makes the trigger pull heavier, but it can be balanced out by installing a 3.5# connector.

Check out GlockTalk for lots of info on keeping you Glock up and running.

Yeah, I suppose broken trigger springs are fairly common. That's the second one I've broken in the ten years or so I've been running Glocks. In all fairness, it wasn't a stock spring. It was a reduced power one I installed it a couple years ago when I was setting the gun up for games.

40,000 rounds and the only malfunction out of my glocks where one broken extractor.  I new I should not have been shooting hirtenberger through it anyways.
