Thompson Center ICON
« on: December 31, 2007, 11:39:08 AM »
Who here has one? I'd like to get my hands on one in .308. I really like what they've done in the design of this rifle.
Is it as good as they say? or better?

I got one of the first ones last year. I see that this year they will offer some stainless versions, as well a long action versions. They will also have a version with a "standard" knob bolt handle. They look pretty good.

I noticed, in a new magazine article, that it goes 10+ lbs, scoped  !   ::)     :(      That's about 9 1/4 lbs bareback (less the 13oz my Leupy weighs) - Downright obese, IMHO.  Nice looking, though.

For comparison, my bone-stock Ruger M77 RSI weighs 6 1/4 lbs (weighed by me) bareback, and I sometimes add a 9oz Burris scope, for a grand total of 7 lbs.

Make no mistake, the ICON is not a light rifle, but I can assure you mine does not top 10 lbs even with the Vari -X III on top. I  would put it in the 8.5 lb. range.

The ones I've looked at seem pretty nice.  Not the lightest gun around, but I don't mind a little extra weight to help with the shootability of the gun.  Anyone got any links to the info about the stainless ones?  Are they in synthetic or wood?  I went to T/C's website but didn't see anything there yet.

If you go to T/C's website, you will have to download the 2008 catalog. It will show you the new versions.  They have stainless/black synthetic, stainless/camo, and the "Classic" version which offers long action chamberings, a hinged floorplate, and a rounded bolt knob.

Thanks!  I knew that I was missing it somewhere on there.

They are not stainless. Its just the weather shield coating like on the Triumph. I am not too pleased with T/c this year.

I haven`t been happy with T/C in a long time .I use to love them, but they are getting away from their roots. I wish they would have just stayed focused on mainly muzzleoaders!! The QLA thing is a joke also. Give me a muzzleloader, walnut and a blued barrel baby!! Hawkens, Renegades, Scouts, I loved them all years ago!!

I wish they would go with stainless and keep it simple. They have updated the Encore ML again, I bet the barrel is 30inches long now.
