Rem Oil and Laminated Stocks
« on: January 01, 2008, 01:54:06 AM »
I was wondering since I use Rem Oil all the time all over all the metal parts its hard to not wipe some of it on the wood stocks and fore ends. I try to keep it wiped off the wood but does anyone think that it would mess up a laminated stock over time ?

That's one reason why I like Eezox, it dries to a protective film after a couple days, so it doesn't soak into the wood like conventional oils, it also can't be beat for metal protection. I also store my firearms muzzle down which further prevents that issue. For a Handi, it also prevents the oil from running down the bore and barrel and getting on the latch and latch shelf which must be kept clean and dry, or accuracy will be inconsistent. ;)

Thanks quickdtoo. Thats the first time Ive heard of Eezox and it certainly out performed everything else in those tests. Also thank for the muzzle down idea. Ive never in my life thought about standing my gun in the corner muzzle down. But then again I dont know as much as I would like. Im not sure when I might get a can because we still have 1 1/2 cans of RemOil left right now but do use it very regular. I make the boys use it (habit) every single time they bring theyre gun back inside the house. We dont do a complete cleaning evrytime but I do make them (they do it without being told now) wipe the metal down especially where they made hand/finger contact with the metal. I have never owned a laminated wood stock and didnt know if the cleaning chemicals would mess up the wood maybe long term ??? I dont know.

Good way to store them, why don't they make gun vaults to hold them like that?  I'd buy one.

When I clean one I leave it standing in a corner for a few days with the barrel down like that.  Once all the oil has drained to the end I run one more dry patch through the barrel, then into the vault for storage.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I started the muzzle down thing years ago with my muzzleloaders, only that was to keep the oil/lube from running down into the breech and creating ignition problems. But I've read of old timers doing the same for centerfire rifles to keep the stocks from getting oil soaked. But it also works well to keep the latch dry on a Handi which is imperative for good accuracy. ;)

Eezox isn't easy to find, the one store that sold it here closed, so I have to buy it online, but Breakfree CLP is a good one and available just about everywhere, so I wouldn't hesitate to use it instead, and it smells better!! ;D

Rog, just turn the gun vault upside down!! ;D :D ;)
