Barnes XPB and/or Cast Performance bullets in S&W 460
« on: January 01, 2008, 06:44:09 AM »
Setting here in Minnesota, 2 above outside with a way negative windchill.  Too cold to shoot, no empty cases to reload; thank God for internet and GBO!
Currently, I use Hornady 240 gr. XTP/Mag bullets in my 460 loads (with H110 powder).  This bullet works great and I can buy them locally for $22.00 / 100.  However, like many of you, I like to experiment with new things and save a money if I can.  I bought 500 Hunter Supply 200 gr. hardcast bullets through Midway for $46.00.  They are designed to be used in 45 ACP and 45 Colt loads.  I use them with Titegroup powder.  I used 454 cases for my 460 loads.  These bullets work well for cheap 45 ACP plinking rounds, but they shot very high and large groups in the 460.
I want to play a little more with some higher quality cast bullets using 460 cases and H110 powder.  My Hodgdon manual shows loads for Cast Performance bullets - nothing under 300 grains though.  I am concidering the 325 gr. CPB LFN (no gas check), and the 335 gr. CPB WLN (with gas check).  I'm new to cast bullets, but it would seem like gas checks would be the way to go. These bullets are more expensive at about $34.00 - $44.00 per 100, but again, that's the price we pay to play.  Could any of you guys who use cast bullets in the big guns give me a recommendation, opinion, advice?  Thanks!
I mentioned the Barnes XPB bullets in the subject line because I saw Midway sells Corbon 460 ammo loaded with Barnes 200gr. XPB bullets for $65.00 / 20.  Holy Smokes!!  This must be some load to command that price!  You can buy these bullets (for buck a piece) and reload your own Much less expensively.  I have never used a Barnes bullet, but I hear great things about them, and I think the day is coming in the not so distant future when our lead bullets will be banned in most areas.  I am going to buy the new Barnes manual when it comes out this month and try box of XPBs in my 460 next summer.  Have any of you used these in your 460s?  Again, recommendations, opinions, and advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards, Chappy

Don't shoot a 460 but run tons of cast through my 45 LC most in 250 and 300 grain , the 300 are a SWC with GC , by far the best bullet that i have found for this gun . I can push them to the max and not have the leading problems that i get with the 250s at the same speeds .

I know this don't help much but if it was me the GCs are the only way to go in that hog of a gun .  ;)
