Light 44 Magnum Load
« on: January 02, 2008, 03:48:56 AM »
I have had some hand and wrist issues due to heavy recoil.  I have also heard stories about John Taffin and others who shot too many heavy loads for years that their hand issues are very serious in their later years.

Am purchasing several more .22s, but I want to shoot my boomers in the off-season.  I have heard of issues with powder placement with small loads of Unique, not to mention how incredibly dirty Unique is, so I want a powder that more fully fills the case.  I don't want to use plain cast bullets as my 44's have very different bore/cylinder diameters and I want to use one load in them and not separate.

Considering Trail Boss powder and either Ranier or Berry's plated bullets.  Any other suggestions?  Remington bulk bullets?  4227 powder?  Appreciate any suggestions or comments on this idea.  This load will be strictly a practice load...possibly be carried on my hip in the off-season for roving wild dogs, but nothing serious.

My go to load for hunting is 24 gr 296 and a 240 XTP and I do not plan on changing that as it is very accurate and deer do no like it from my guns.  Current 44s are a Bisley Hunter and a FA M 83.

Thanks.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Trail Boss works well as does Tightgroup, 4227 will produce pretty close to the same velocity and recoil as H110/W296

Personally,  I like Unique for light loads.  Even though it doesn't fill the case, it is still my primary cast bullet/light load powder.  I guess I've missed something over the years. but dirty isn't something I worry about.  I've never had a revolver or autoloader fail to fire because of shooting Unique through it.  I'm sure that more than once I've had more than 500 rounds fire without a cleaning.  When you get around to cleaning, it's not that hard to make it pretty again.

dont know how low you want to go. But bullseye works great for real light loads and unique fills in the middle.

I personally use 9 grains Unique behind a 240gr. cast bullet for my target/practice loads and it's a pussycat.  This is a very accurate load in my 629 classic and to me it isn't very dirty.  I also use it in my XD 40 and it is very accurate and doesn't cause me any problems.  I was using BlueDot before and I had to run a brush down my bore every 5 to 10 rounds because it was so dirty that the rounds wouldn't chamber in my auto.  I also used Unique with the 240gr. XTP and it was also a nice accurate, mild recoiling load and it was also relatively clean.  I'm new to this so I may not be much help but the info listed above is what works for me.

best of luck to ya,
Ken
