Deal or No Deal?

A guy at work is looking to buy a .45-70 Marlin and I have 2. The one I'm thinking about selling him is an 1895GS. It's so nice I'll probably never hunt with it. The one I'm going to keep is a clean 1972 era 1895.

The reason I'm thinking about selling one of the .45-70s is that a local shop has an early cross bolt safety .444 with Leupold mounts on it for $419.00. It's been hunted with some, but still looks pretty nice. I'm guessing I could buy it cheaper if I had cash in hand.

I already have a 39A, two .30-30s, a .35 Remington, and the two .45-70s of course.  I'm not really that keen on the stainless Guide Gun.

The Guide Gun currently wears a Leupold 2-7X33 that could be transfered to one of my other rifles.

Whatch think?

im not much on stainless leverguns and had a stainless guide gun and sold it because of that. But im a cast bullet shooter and out of all three the guide gun is the only non microgroved one and id keep it just for that reason. Mircro groved guns can be made to shoot cast well but it takes more fiddling around to get them to.

Thanks Lloyd for your comments.  I'm thinking I may keep the Guide Gun and try to put a deposit on the .444.

I want to add a .444, and a 308MX to my pile of Marlins.

Or, you could sell one, and look for a 336 in .32 Winchester special.......

The .32 Winchester Special offers nothing over the 2 .30-30s I already own.  It would just be owning one for the sake of owning one.  Nothing wrong with that.

or you could get a 336 in .35 Remington. My son's 336 is a 30-30 and he and I both like his gun. However myself and 3 or 4 hunting buddies have 336's in .35 Remington. Every year it seems another hunter in camp  shows up with a used 336 in .35 Remington after seeing and shooting our guns....<><....:)

Yes,and the .35 doesn't really offer anything over the 30.30's......the .32's are getting scarce around here.....don't see very many anymore......that's why I'd like to find a good one......

Really, the .444 isn't much different from the .45.70 either.........

Fun to kick this kind of stuff around though......did you buy the .444?

I went back today and bought it.  I got it for $350.00.  It was much nicer than I had remembered it being.  I think that's a fair deal with the Leupold rings and base.  The rear sight was missing, but they found one in the parts box and installed it for free.  The wood has a few love marks but the figure in the wood is outstanding.

I have 2 nice Weaver K4s made in ElPaso, TX that I want to send in for rebuild and duplex reticles.  I may mount one of those on it.

I would go with a Heavy Duplex if I were you. Good deer drive gun.

I have a 444 with the ballard rifling and the 1 in 20 twist and I love it.  The gun is two years old and shoots and handles really well.  I put a receiver sight and a williams fire sight on the front, works great!
