The 308 "Stubby" is done!
« on: January 02, 2008, 06:37:16 PM »
Well thanks guys!
You have gotten me hooked on this encore stuff.
I bought the prohunter with the 28" 308 barrel.
Then found an extra barrel, had the smith bob it to 16.25"
Just over 6 lbs total!
Should be the perfect close in brush buster!

So now I have the perfect gun for the long field shots, and brush both, just a barrel change away!

I thought my 20" Encore 308 was short. Short is handy and convenient. I like it. how does it shoot?

Nice looking rifle,my 15 inch barrel 308 loved max loads of varget with 130 grain Barnes XLC bullets,1/2 inch 3 shot groups at 100.I used it as a rifle with a butt stock. We can do that up here in Canada because the total length is over 26 1/2 inches.
I shot 2 deer with it and it worked great.
Shoot once and carry a sharp knife. ;)

Here is a pic of my Encore shorty in 308. I bought a stock Encore barrel on sale for 215 bucks and had it cut to 20 inches.

That's what I might do also. I was thinking about getting one of the Blued Bergara Barrels and having it cut down to 17inches. I am not sure what caliber. I thought about a 45-70.

You can get a stock 20" ProHunter barrel in 45-70. That would save you the cost of cutting and crowning. Too long ?

That will run around $400. You have to get that special forearm that is right around $60 at the gun shop. The barrel is $350. I can get the Bergara for $180 and I already have forearms and I can get it cut down for less than $75 with a crown. I like the pro hunter barrel but the price is very high.
