760 to 358? drill & tap ok?
« on: January 04, 2008, 06:28:29 AM »
I was looking at a Rem 760 in 35Rem and was wondering if could be rechambered to 358Win? And is there a Smith that could be recomended? Can an early non-D&T rifle be drilled and tapped on the top?

the case head is smaller on the 35 than the 358=no unless you get in to a lot of other
work that would be cheaper to find one that more fits your needs.
without research not sure on scope mounts on top.of old ones. I do know they used a side
mount like the 94 Winchesters and the mounts were made so the scope was above the gun
when mounted rather than a total side mount like the 94's.

I had this older M760 drilled and tapped.  According to the serial # it was manufactured in 1954.  It has a Weaver Base Mount, with Weaver Rings.  It has worn different scopes over the years.

The rehamber will work - just first obtain a .308 bolt & mag, before finish reaming/headspacing.

I'm taking a 35 rem to Gander MT this week for this rechambering.    I've never heard an example where the bolt needed to be resized for 358 brass.

I almost had one of there done last year. I have a 700 ADL re-barreled to .358 that I love and wanted to try a repeater. I found a 760 in 35 real cheap at a local store and ( I hate to admit it ) waited on it until I did some research. Of course the gun was gone when i went back. I was thinking of a re-bore on a 88 Winchester or a Savage 99. ( am I allowed to mention those names here? ) and have not yet found the right gun. I would like to know how it turns out for you. You will love the .358 once you hunt with it. Shotgunner
