Advice on blr

I'm looking at buying a blr in 308. Made in japan. looks like it has never been fired. There asking $599 for it. Good price? What kind of accuracy can I expect from this? I'm planning on using it on a bear hunt this spring. Any input would be great.

The price is not bad for a gun that is like new. Is the box included? Scope rings and mounts? Extra magazine? Mags are about $50 each. you should be able to ask those questions and get them to throw in mounts and rings or a magazine for that money or buy it for $550. I just saw a like new BLR in 7/08 sell for $350 and kicked myself for not buying it.
I would be surprised if that BLR will not shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. Both of my BLR's easily will.

Except for the very few first BLR's made in the USA, and a few years worth made in Belgium, all subsequent BLR's have been made in Japan by Miroku.

If it's a steel receiver .308, especially the early, pre-BLR-81 model, than it's a fair price.

If it's an alloy receiver BLR-81, I'd pass.  $200 worth of "pass".

I reload so I was also wondering how strong is the action? I normally don't go near full loads. Are there any problems using full loads in these?  The gun store has it listed at 599. I can probably knock off 100 bucks.

Phoneman:  No need to concern yourself with action strength with the BLRs - they can handle full strength reloads.  The price of $599 for one with a scope and rings isn't bad - in my experience, nice BLRs typically run around $500 without a scope.  You can age that BLR at Browning's web site:

It is just a BLR. not an 81. it was made in 1974 and looks like it spent it's life in a safe. Going to take it to the range this weekend and see what it'll do.

Rangr44, I have owned, collected, and hunted with BLRs since 1970. I have never heard of a USA mfg. BLR. Whats your source of this information. Regards, Byron
