Lapping of Scope rings
« on: January 05, 2008, 10:14:49 AM »
I installed a set of Leupold Quick Release mount/rings on my 30-06 "two-legged varmint rifle" and while sighting it in, I discovered the Leupold 6.5-20X scope I was using ran out of elevation at 500 meters. I took the rifle to my gunsmith and he placed a 0.015" brass shim under the rear mount and that solved the elevation problem.

However, with the rear ring being slightly higher than the front one, I noticed this is putting some stress and flex on the scope. Can the scope rings be lapped to put a little bit of forward cant on them to eliminate flexing the scope tube? If so, can any competent gunsmith do this?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I myself use the burris zee signiture rings , it uses a self aligning plastic insert and they come in different thickness so it can act like a shim . scope wont move ,no stress on the scope , no ring marks and you can do it all yourself . There not the cheapest rings out there but there worth it to me.

Do Burris rings with inserts come in a quick disconnect version?

NO. I think you need to decide what's important to you. Is it the ability to quickly remove the scope or protecting the expensive scope from damage and possible ruin from the stress forces being placed on it?

If you just gotta take it off regularly for some reason use Weaver type bases and Burris Signature Zee Rings. Then you can take them off and return them fairly quickly and easily but Burris makes no rings compatiable with the Leupold QR base.

I use ONLY Burris Signature rings on my guns.

Back to your original question.  You can order a scope lapping kit from Brownells or probably MidwayUSA and lap them yourself as it is not rocket science.  If I were closer to you I'd lap them but that is not feasible.  Any gun crank that has a lapping kit could do this simple job.  I would recommend the rings be aligned before shooting the rifle much as the stress might wreck the scope.

Lapping isn't difficult for sure if you have the tools in hand but that aside I don't think it's gonna fix the problem created by shimming.

The best buy on a lapping kit is from Russ Hayden, it was $26 shipped w/tax for me, but Burris Signature rings are the way to go. ;)

There may be other solutions but the Burris rings are the easiest and neatest.  Lapping won't solve the problems caused by the shimming.. Unless you can figure a way to lap the rings with the shim in place..

Thank you all very much for your answers !

I already have a set of HIGH Burris Z rings on my silhouette rifle, so it looks like I'll be getting another set in MEDIUM height.

Best wishes,

Jake

Just an FYI, Burris "Zee" rings aren't the same as Signature Zee rings, Zee rings are Weaver style, Signatures have the polymer inserts including the Signature Zees, Zees cost about $10 less that Signature Zees, and are different heights than Zees in medium and high, aren't available in low, which is my only gripe about em. ;)

Fixing the rings you have shouldn't be a big deal for a smith with a vert. mill and a little machine skills. Set up a fly cutter to the inside ring dia. and remove .015 from the bottom half of the front ring base. Then face mill off .010-.015" from the same base on the flats that are tapped to recieve the ring screws. Lap the ring set-up and mount your scope.
