S&W 629
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:00:38 AM »
I bought a new S&W 629 performance center 44mag last week and was wondering if anyone new a holster that would work with the 629 7.5" barrel and mini dot sight mounted? Here is a picture of the handgun it shoots super well and the accuracy is hole in hole at 30 yards from a bench so far I have been really impressed.

That is a beautiful piece!  Who manufactures that spotting sight?  I like it and it looks like it would be great for hunting.

As to holsters, there are many out there.  I use an Uncle Mike's shoulder style holster.  They call it a Sidekick Bandolier:

Cabela's sells them just to mention one.  I like it because it is so quiet in the woods!!!

Thanks for the tip I ordered one of the Uncle mikes holsters to try out should be here this week. My sight is the burris fastfire several people make about the same sight.  I like the burris sight I have had the sight for about 6 months now it has been on a 357 and 40cal and impact point has never shifted at all. Battery life is several years 3-5 I was told on one 2032 battery from walmart. The only thing I don't like is the dot appears to flicker at dark still works fine just alittle annoying.  I was told some of the other higher dollar mini sights don't do that but don't know that for a fact.Overal it's a great hand gun sight for the money and weights like 2-3 oz's maybe not the best sight ever made but it gets the job done much better than iron sights. With Iron sights I was just trying to hit the center part of a paper plate at 35 yards this weekend. With the sight I was shooting a 2x2 inch dot  and I even had a good 3 shoot hole in hole group ;D

Terry, what are these sights going for? Burris' site doesn't list a price. One more question, will the sight, as it comes, mount onto a Weigand S&W mount for red dot scopes?

Hey Terry thanks for the info on the Mini holo sight.  I am familiar with the type of sight, just never knew they came that small.  Until now I have only seen the large ones that were on auto loaders and they looked so gangly and awkward.

Have to agree with Dusty on the old eyes problem, that sight would help greatly.  I would also be interested in the price.

I gave about $160 for the sight and it came with a weaver type rail mount that has worked perfect on everything I have mounted it on. I can even remove the sight with it's thumb screw by hand only and reattach and the impact point does not move any at the 30-40 yard ranges I have been shooting so far. When buying the sight I liked the fact I could remove and reattach the sight. That way I could use Iron sights and dot both with out resighting in but after haveing owned the sight for about 6 months now I never take the sight off it is just much easy to shot and hit your target when compared to the iron sights. I have 20/20 vision but I can still shoot much better with the dot sight. The bushnell Holo sights are also really nice I have three eotech Holos which are about the same thing but they are alot bigger in size vs the mini dot sights. However the holo sights are built super tough and the way the dot works on them kicks butt. I would like to try one of the higher dollar mini sights sometime I was told the Doctor/trijicon/Pride sights are even nicer. You can go to www.MidwayUsa.com and then to optics /red dots and there is several models of red dots and user reviews

Well I added some new grips that fit my hands better than the factory ones and also bagged my first game with the 629PC this Saturday. I used the buffalo bore 44sp 255gr SWC at around 1050FPS out of my pistol to drop this boar in it's tracks. My hunting dog and I stalked to about 50 yards of this boar and I used a small tree to rest on for the shot. The bullet went right in the pocket behind the shoulder and broke the leg on the far side while exiting. No tracking on this one I wish it was always this easy .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                !

Yep She is a Weimerander. She is just now starting to make a good hunting dog at first she would chase everything like most dogs. Now that she is about two years old and lots of training she follows me and sneaks up on game behind me. I hate the early years of training but once you get a good dog they make a great hunting buddy and see, smell, and track much better than I can. I was pretty happy about the boar, but I didn't add the part where I missed a nice Tom bobcat about two hrs before ;D. It was about a 70 yard shot and faceing me and the dot pretty much covered the cats whole chest at that range. Didn't help that I felt myself pull to the right when I went to shoot.

Terry - yep, you're right about the dog and Weimeranders make great huntin' partners.  Too bad about that Bobcat but I have heard the 'dot' scopes have a tendency to obscure targets.  Aren't ya glad you missed the cat and hung around to wait for the boar?????  Mikey.

Nice pig!!!  I didn't know that those dogs were good hunters.  They are really beautiful dogs.  I like those grips you got.  I went with the German Nill Grips:

These grips feel so much better in my hand in the woods.  I have tried so many different grip stocks I could open up a store and sell them, ha-ha!
