Bad Night for a Bear. ( Graphic Photos)
« on: January 08, 2008, 04:10:44 AM »
My daughter shot a Black Bear that ran from the bait site. Her husband, one of my sons and I went to help her track the bear. The blood trail was like usual for bear, very light. After 60 yards or so,the blood trail stopped. We were in an alder swamp with tall grass and there was a large area trampled flat ahead of us, then more blood. We continued. Now blood was all over the ground and brush.  Finally at the far end of the trampled area was the bear. Well at least part of the bear. The head and shoulders were there as were the hind quarters. Everything in between except for rib cage and spine was gone. Timber wolves beat us to the bear.

Where are you hunting at?

If it is the Big Fork area I know that there are a ton of wolves there and see them often while bear hunting and baiting.

I saw a picture once at a bar calle "Ye ol warf" on the west side of Cross Lake that a pilot photographed a pack of wolves having their way with a grizzly bear in Alaska, it was a really good photo and he had it blown up and framed so the detail of the attack was really clear, the point to my story is that the wolves are not affraid of much in the wild including humans.

Any pictures of this bear?

Two Bears, This was over toward Big Falls. My daughter has photos. I will ask her for them. I sat in a stand over to the East and watched a young 130 - 150 pound bear at the bait crib. He was probably there 20 minutes or so when he got real nervous. He heard something I could not hear. After several minutes he took off away from the sound and I heard him splashing through the swamp for a long ways. I was on high alert ready for the big boar. I caught movement and saw a Timber Wolf watching me. All I could see was his head. He slipped off into the swamp and about 10 minutes later the whole pack was taking something down splashing all over the place. I listened to them for a long time. Several times I was going to leave figuring my hunt was ruined. I waited and in the last seconds of shooting light I noticed a form just outside the bait clearing. It looked to be the size of the little bear again. Then it stood up. It was huge. I only made out how big the bear was and then it was too dark to shoot. The little bear was terrified of the wolves, the big bear was not. This all took place in 3-4 hours.

This is the remains as we found them that night. We track at night whenever possible. I think we interrupted the wolves dinner.

Great photos!  Crazy that is.  Good old wilderness keeps us belwildernessed.

Wolves will eat pretty much anything like that...

A friend of mine shot a black bear with a bow, and was tracking it, and found some big scrapes where it looked like it was trying to get away from something.  The bear was never found.  It seemed like a big brown came and took him away.  We're all hunting something....

A mature bear has no use for wolves and the wolves show them a lot of respect from a few times I've seen them interact.
