Need tips on making straight stock from std pistol grip.
« on: January 08, 2008, 05:47:48 AM »
I would like to cut a std pallet wood stock to make a straight style stock.
I'm sure some of you have done this.  Any tips you can offer would be great.  Does the top edge need to be modified, or just the lower edge?  What are you using to cut and shape it?

Thanks,

Kevin

Can't help it Tim.  I'm a Handiholic.  Can't stop buying barrels.  It's an addiction.   Need more!!!, more!!!

Thanks for the link.  I knew I saw someone who has done it.  I am looking more for the procedures that guys are using, such as which tools, where and how much they are cutting, measurements etc.

I cut mine to rough shape with a band saw, then went with a wood rasp and then a hand sander.  Paint was Walmart truck bed liner.  Larry

Larry,
That's about the shape I am looking for.  Did you only modify the bottom edge, or did you have to change the top too?
Nice looking barrel too.  Is that parkerized?

Hi buddy, I have done quite a few and they have all come out great. I do suggest you use a slide radial arm miter saw and work carefully. draw an imaginary straight line from the toe of the stock to where the stock joins the receiver and then be sure to hold the stock in position on the table with the screwed down hold down clamps. There are many "woodworkers" going around with short fingers or only 2 or 3 fingers on a hand because they thought they could hold a piece of wood in position. By using this saw you can cut a straight line and you end up with a proper English style stock, one which will match the factory straight stocks exactly. What you want to avoid is the "perch belly" or slightly rounded  look of the bottom of stocks which have not been cut straight (unless you like that look). It is also important to be sure your buttstock is square and flat on the table and you have wedges under the rounded parts to prevent it from rocking or moving as you make the one cut with the saw that is required fo this job, other than finish sanding, and I suggest a palm sander for that. I use pieces cedar shingles for wedges..above all be CAREFUL, do not lose a finger or two  doing this....good luclk..The are a couple of pictures of stocks I have done this exact thing to on this site. a couple were posted not to long age. Any questions on how to do it please, just ask, I do not want to see anyone hurt or lose fingers doing this. If you do it right they come out perfectly straight and identical and indistinguishable from the factory straight stocks....<><....:)

check this thread for a couple of pictures of pistol grip stocks which I have reworked into straight English "squire" style stocks:

I hand sawed, rasped and sanded on my .58 Huntsman wood. Original forend and Monte Carlo Handi Buttstock were used:

Another good looking job Hammerspur, that is the beginning of one of my next projects. I am going to remove the pistol grip from a Monte Carlo stock and then reconfigure the leading edge of the Monte Carlo thinning it out a bit and perhaps working on the back end of the Monte Carlo as well to hopefully resemble an older Shutzen style buttstock a bit. I have even thought about the possibility of removing some wood from the top right (lengthwise) side of the Monte Carlo to perhaps have it resemble a bit of a rollover cheekpiece (for a right handed shooter).....<><....:)

Thanks MSP... You can't tell from that pic but I did something like you plan for yours. Besides abbreviating the aft end there's a bit of a thumb groove on the right side of the leading edge of the Monte Carlo and I thinned and dished the left side of it as well (I'm right handed) so my cheekbone drops right into the center, bore line.

Too lazy to take another pic and post it right this instant.    ::)

no problem buddy, I know pictures are a pain, my old camera died and I cannot post pictures from my wife's camera, even with the old camera I had to go to quick for help in posting pictures. If you do get a chance I would be interested in seeing the other side of that stock and what you did to it...Thanks....<><....:)
