canvas tent
« on: January 08, 2008, 09:36:52 PM »
I have been camping in a camper for the last 12 years now and am wanting to go back to a tent to get off the main roads and away from other campers, my girl friend hunts with me and we are wanting to try to dec. elk hunt here in New Mexico. so i need a good tent i can keep warm, we went to a camper after i had her in a tent 2 years in a row where we had snow, freezing rain, or rain, and wind the whole time the last year every thing we had with us was wet as wind pushed rain through the canvas. but now she said we can try a tent as long as it has a stove and cots. now i am looking for a tent (tax return maybe) i want something i can put 3 cots in, set up by myself, light weight, and sturdy. i have never liked the newer cloths for tents. A friend just bought one made out of one of the new fabrics that said it would breathe not so, better than most but i had a canvas tent i bought used 15 or more years ago that was better than his yes maybe wind would push water through it but i would like to see his tent after 2 weeks of what we went through, i don't think it would have taken the wind.

i would like to hear form any one who camps in the colder mouths or has a canvas tent and has ideas. i looking at the teton from reliable tent. would also like some ideas on tent stoves..

i would like something i can set up for a day and then take down and move from day to day

Yeah, Leonard at Buckstitch is good.  A 12' x 12' spike tent with 4' or 5' walls should be easy to put up and are pretty roomy.

Also, think about the Kodiak or a Mountain Spike with a 4' wall from Reliable Tent and Tipi.  They are on sale right now.  The Teton also has some nice attributes.  I'd get the any of these with a fly.

Finally, the Spike tents from the Wall Tent Shop are nice also.  I think they be made by Davis Tent, so either source is good.

The thing that makes Buckstitch and Wall Tent Shop attractive is you can get Spike tents with sod flaps and no floor.  I like that because you can tailor a floor to your liking with tarps and remove them to clean up.

The best stove I've found is from Snowtrekker Tents.  The Medium-sized stove should be enough for most purposes but for 10 bucks more the Large would be insurance for those sub-zero nights.

If you are not packing or tobagganing in a tent far from your car/truck then I would get as big a tent as you can handle.  While the Teton is a nice tent, think about how much room you will actually have in it with three cots, three people and their gear and the stove in one corner.  I would think a 12' x 12' Spike is as small as I would want to go to be comfortable.  Also, a 4' or 5' wall just seems to make a tent seem much larger because you have more room to stand erect.  Hence, I would consider the 12' x 12' spike w/ 4' walls and a stove jack from Reliable as well.  Or just check out Buckstitch and Wall Tent Shop for their spike tents.  You can always have them put some windows in if you will use them in warmer weather.  I know its more money, but it is worth it to be more comfortable.

thank you for responding i am sending buckstitch a email i don't see the flame treatment some places you have to have. i do like the spike tents i just worried how much of the tent you could stand up in i really want to be able to stand next to the stove and warm up. i would like to be able to carry the tent by myself so the 5' wall spike is way on the upper end of weight.

i really like the snowtrerekker base-camp tent but its out of my price range..

she wants me to see where we draw a tag before i buy a tent, she is still hoping we draw someplace we can take the toyhaller. i am wanting to get one to take scouting while she is still agreeable.

I believe Buckstitch uses flame rated Sunforger canvas.

The Teton you were considering only has 2'6" walls so you would only be able to be upright near the center of the tent front to back.  I'm 5'10" and have been in a Buckstitch 12'x12'x5' spike tent.  I could be completely upright except right next to the walls.  A 12'x12'x5' spike tent with a stove jack will weigh about 45 pounds, certainly light enough for one person to tote from a vehicle to the campsite.  A 10'x10'x5' spike would be about 38 pounds.  A cot is generally 2'6"x7' so in a 12'x12' tent you can put two cots on opposite side walls pushed to the back wall and still have room for a cot between them on the back wall.  With the cots on the side walls you would have about 5' between the cot and the front wall and you would have about 6' between the opposing side wall cots.  It is quite a bit tighter in a 10'x10'.  With a cot pushed to the back wall on the stove side a cot will fit along the rest of the back wall.  The third cot will then take up the rest of the side wall opposite the stove.  There is about 3' from the cot on the stove side to the front wall and about 4' between the cots on the side walls.  This is enough room for two people to pass each other, but you will have to decide if it is enough room for you.

thank you

davis tent responded to my email on there herder tent they said with what i want a tent for they didn't think i would be happy with it as the door slants past the wall and up the roof if there is snow on the roof and you open it the snow falls in the tent. i had not thought of that and all the spike type tents i have seen look like they will do the same thing so i am going to have to rethink tents, will prabley end up with a wall tent witch puts me back at the road i haven't seen one that i can carry in one trip with the frame and where we want to go you cant cut wood unless it has fallen to the ground.

To transport the extra weight you might want to consider one of the game carts to haul your stuff into the campsite.

This is generally not true with a 5' wall as the door only goes to the eave and not over it into the roof.  In addition, I recommend getting a fly to go over the roof (makes the tent warmer in cold weather).  This addresses the snow issue on the shorter walled tents where the door goes into the roof as snow collects on the fly, not the roof.

Check out the 5' wall spike tents from the Wall Tent Shop and Buckstitch Canvas.

sorry it has been so long since i have been on line, been working and had some things to get done.

thank you for you response..

i have traded a few emails with Kyle at Davis tent, they have a pole set for there wall tents i really like the wall tent shop calls it the the elk hunter i think, Davis calls it traditional but there is a vido of a young girl setting it up on there page so mabe i can do it. the tent its self would be approx #45 the poles #42 or so but would be short enuf i could hall them on the artic cat or carry them as far as i am willing to make 2 trips just for the tent and the girl freind likes them much better she thinks ther would be more room to move around with out bending over.  the cart is a good idea, i have thought about one before to hall field decoys and game just had not thought about halling camp on one.

I am sure that if you were careful and kept the center of gravity low, you could figure a way to pull one of the larger game haulers behind the arctic cat.
