Anyone have a Bell & Carlson duramax stock on their Savage?
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:51:51 AM »
I've given some thought to an aftermarket stock for a savage, and was thinking about a bell and carlson black duramax with the grey spyderweb.  I've never read anything good or bad about them, because I've never read any personal reviews about them.  If you have one do you like it?  Did changing your stock effect your accuracy one way or the other?

I do not have a stock like you are talking about. I do have a B&C Medalist stock for my Remington 700. It is fully bedded in the action area and is a very nice stock. It is light gray with black spider webbing. You did not say how old your Savage is or if it is synthetic, laminated, or wood stock.  I do not think that the stock you are talking about would be of any advantage over the one you have. There are exceptions if you are willing to pays your money. If you have a wood stocked gun and you want to make it more stable/weather resistant. Your present stock is broken. Your present stock is not pillar bedded. I am not sure if the Duramax is pillar bedded. If it is then these are the only reasons I can think of to change. If it is a modern Savage, then it is already pillar bedded. I would not think the Duramax would have any advantages over any of the standard stocks with the exceptions noted above. Even if The present stock is plastic, it will be pillar bedded and you can sand it down and paint it any color you want.

My savage will be new with the plastic stock.  I'm only interested in changing the stock because after the price of putting on a limbsaver I might as well have just gotten a new stock that has a premium recoil pad already on it.

I have one on my Savage 110 in 30-06.  Originally it had the Savage wood stock and a non-existent recoil pad.  Shooting Greek surplus ball or the $10 a box 150gr. Federal ammo was kind of stompy and left a nice bruise on my shoulder after 20 rounds.  So I got the Duramaxx from Midway for essentially $40 more than a replacement pad.  After putting it on, and one thing you will have to do is either get shorter action screws, or cut the ones on the rifle on a bench grinder (they don't tell you that in the instructions), there's a huge difference.  When I shoot my keeper load (4.0 cc of IMR4350 over a 150gr Sierra ProHunter)  my group sizes dropped to a little under an inch @ 100yds.  But more importantly, the gun balanced better for me and the Pachmar Decellerator pad let's me shoot the gun all day long.  Hope this helps...

I have one on my Savage 110. I had to replace the action screws, I also replaced the trigger guard. I got all of them in stainless steel from Savage shooter supply, who are awesome. The rifle fitted the action perfectly, just need to drill one hole for the second trigger guard screw. My Savage is a 7mm Rem mag and the new stock and recoi pad make it a pleasure to shoot.

I'm surprised to hear that they didn't make it so you could use the same screws.  If I get the stock maybe I should just buy the screws too.  How much were they?

I got the stainless screws so a little more expensive, maybe $10? I don't remember. This Savage is a 1995 model and came with the older plastic stock with no pillar bedding, that's why the screws were the wrong length. I guess this may be a common problem as SSS keep the new screws in stock.

Did they say that if it's a new rifle would the screws fit?  For $10 it's not to bad either way.

I had the BC for my Savage 116. I did not like it, as my gun never fit in the stock right. I called BC and they told me to shorten the screws, etc. I did, and then they told me it was not 100% finished and I had to sand it some. Well, a few swipes with the sandpaper and it had a hole in it. I ended up buying a Savage stock off the internet, and had to order all new action screws from Savage.

My savage 110fp came in last night and my b&c duramax was almost a drop in fit. The rear screw for the trigger guard needed a hole to be drilled for it.  I did that and the rifle fit perfectly.  Later I filed a little bit of material off the inside of the forend to make the barrel free floating.  All this plus putting on a set of rings and scope took less than 20 minutes so it wasn't a big deal.  I'm a big fan of this stock especially when comparing it to the factory stock, it just fits me better.

I have two Duramaxxs, and two Medalists, and they're great. Any hardware store sells new action screws for less than a dollar.

Did you replace your action screws?

Mine work, but I can tell that one of them isn't getting much contact in the threads.

I put a Duramax stock on my 300 RUM 116 stainless and one on my 110fp in 25-06. They were almost completely drop in with some minimum removal of some material on one of them. The accuracy of both guns improved slightly with the new stocks, probably because the stocks are stiffer than the cheapo stock that came from the factory. The looks of both improved quite a bit (my opinion).
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I've had mine out to the range a few times now and the farthest I've shot is 500 yards.  I keep putting one bullet mark right next to another one at 500 yards.  I wish I could say I had more to do with it but it's the gun.  I'm very happy with this setup.
