Pointed bullets for the 45/70
« on: January 10, 2008, 02:14:51 PM »
Does anyone make a reasonably priced pointed bullet for the 45/70? Like the bullets shot out of muzzle loaders. Shockwave style bullets. If so, I'd appreciate your thoughts and links where to buy or manufacturer.

Just the Barnes Original, all of the spitzer muzzleloader bullets are .452" that I'm aware of, I shoot them in my 45 Colt single shot. There are some spitzer cast bullets too.

The only ballistic tipped bullet like that in .458" isn't available as a component,  the flex-tip in the Leverevolution ammo. It would be nice if Barnes makes it in their TTSX line, but so far only .308" and .338" are made. :-\

If  you are interested, don't forget the postell and snover type pointed lead bullets for the 45-70, they are streamlined and aerodynamic for long range hunting and sillywet use.  You can buy them from several places on the internet.

Lee makes a 500 grain, very pointed, bullet mould for the 45/70.

It looks as though Barnes TSX bullets are available in 458.  I've never used one, but suspect it would be pointy.

They're pointed, but I don't consider $1 or more each "reasonably priced" as the OP asked for, although they're about the same price as the Original, they come in boxes of 20 instead of 50, so it seems like they're not so expensive.  :'(
