I am using a .22-250 with 55gr bullets but would really like to pick up a Hornet for shooting within calling ranges.

Cannons all of them!  A proper preditor rifle is one of the 17 CF's.  I use a 17 Remington with 30gr Berger non-MEF BT's.  Larry

.17's are Fine if you have NO other choice and have Tiny, Mangy yotes... they are Useless in the East with Big Healthy Yotes.. Period.

I use a .223 with 55 grain V-Max 90% of the time.  If the wind is kicking and or I expect longer shots I take the .243 with 75 grain V-Max.

Guess I need to qualify that, if you can hit where you aim a 17 is perfect, but if you can't then probably a 30-06 would be a better choice.  Ace probably knows a lot more about trying to kill those mean old eastern Coyotes.  Larry

I use these in this order more or less...

Ruger 77-Hornet (50g Sierra SP at around 2500 fps)

Open sighted Marlin 1894C 357 magnum (125g SP at around 1400 fps)

870 20 gauge express magnum youth version fitted with adult stock (Federal 3" magnum #2 shot, or Win. supreme 3" #4 shot)

I've also hunted predators with my 357 Blackhawk, but my 32 magnum Single-Six is gonna likely replace it on future hunts   ;D

This is reality and say's a bunch. It is perhaps why I am using a 55gr pill out of the .22-250 as a good medium.
In the mean time, I have been whittling down a good hardwood stick so's I can whap those yotes cross the bridge of the nose when they come in just like you would do to a leg-trapped fox  ;)

The big carcass eaters up around my area in Missouri must not have gotten that message.  I switched to .17 Rem this year and will never be going back.
