Lubricating cases on a Progressive Loader?
« on: January 11, 2008, 10:51:52 PM »
I am setting up a new Lock-N-Load AP and it occurred to me that some of my cases have to be lubed to be sized. (ex. 308, 45-70) What is the best way to do this and what lube have others found to be easiest to clean up? All input is welcome.

probably the easiest round is to use hornady one shot. Just spray the cases and load and supposidly you can just leave it on. If a guy is doing heavy duty sizing like running cases through a smalll base die or initial resizing of military brass hornday has given me an occasionaly stuck case. What i like to use for heavy duty sizing is anyhydrous lanolin or imperail sizing wax (same thing) You can do one of two things. You cans size and prime and then take your cases out and run them in your tumbler long enough to remove the lube or what i do and surely dont recomend to others is just run them through and tumble the loaded rounds for an a hour or so. Ive never had an incident doing it and ive had over 500 rounds at a time in a dillon tumbler but i dont make a habbit of staying in the barn when there tumbling.  If this inspires feer in you. You can take the loaded rounds and lay them on a towel and spray brake cleaner on them and roll them in the towel to clean off the lube. Ill probably get crucified on here for saying this. But ive done it for over 20 years and have never had a problem and have never heard of a loaded round going off in the tumbler. What a guy wouldnt want to do is leave them for any extended period of time as its possible you would remove the coating on your powder or change the grain size and it could effect the burning rate of your powder but again ive done it for an hour or two and never seen where it changed velocitys in my rounds.

I tried loading bottleneck cases on my Hornady AP and the hassle of lubing was more than I could deal with so I went back to the single stage for rifle loads and only load straight walled handgun on the progressive.  I measure case length after sizing and trim them to length and  can't do that while they are going around on the plate.  Someone needs to design a lubing station for progressive presses.  Maybe you could make your fortune if you can make one that works.

Depending on the case I use a RCBS lube die. It works fine unless you are reloading a very large quantity and have to stop to fill the lube die.
All other calibers I use Imperial sizing wax, it works great, just dab your left index finger into the wax and roll the top 2/3 or so of the case between your thumb and fore finger as you put the case into the press

I use a lube pad, apply the case lube in liberal amounts, place ten 308 cases on the pad then roll in the lube. This seems to apply the exact amount of lube needed. Add lube as needed. I only lube ten at a time. A person could prelube a quantity if desired. This works well with my Dillon 550.

i use imperial die sizing wax for all rifle cartridges, once i got a group sized i ay out 5 cases and  i dribble each case with lighter fluid, then wipe with paper towels.from here  proceed with the remaining steps. i am using a turret not a progressive press. dan
