GP 100 Stainless
« on: January 12, 2008, 09:01:35 AM »
Just found a revolver I have been looking for for a long time. It is a GP 100, 4" barrel in stainless. I would rate it about 95%, has a very few handling marks. Grips, both rubber and insert are in great condition. Got it to use as my backup when hunting. Paid $348. out the door with no box or paper work. No idea if this is good price, but have been looking for this particular gun for a while. What do you guys think about the price and would appreciate any ideas on off the shelf ammo for white tails. Thanks.

My first handgun was a 4" GP 100, just like yours. I cannot remember what I paid for it, but what you paid sounds more than fair for the value of the gun. I have always liked Ruger firearms, and the GP 100 is a great representation of their quality. I had a trigger job done on mine, as I always thought that it was a little heavy.  I don't know what type of white tail hunting you do, but the .357, especially out of a 4" barrel is marginal at best. Now, I know that there are many that will disagree, but my personal minimum is 41 mag. That said, if you pick your shots at close whitetails, any heavy loaded softpoint or hard-cast lead bullet should do the job. You may try ammo from Cor-Bon. Hornady just loaded their Evolution bullet in .357 mag, and that looks like a winner as well. Nice gun, and good luck!

Thanks, K.K.

The .357 would be used for short range only. Where I hunt, there are a lot of shots less than 50 yards. Still haven't had a chance to shoot it, but it is a long time to next hunting season. I had a .41 mag Blackhawk and could never get comfortable with the SA grips. Hope to get out within the next couple of weeks to try this one out.

"I had a .41 mag Blackhawk and could never get comfortable with the SA grips."

I have had the same problem when running hunting class (read higher powered loads but well with in safe reloading date and pressure ranges) ammo though my 45 colt. I switched to a bisley frame and could not be happier.

The price you paid is good. I paid about the same for a blued 4" GP 100 357 used. They are great, heavy duty guns that will last long after I stop working...

I picked up a used stainless 6" for around that.  Around here that's as good of a deal as you're going to find.  You're gonna like it when you shoot it, trust me.

You got a good deal...I purchased my NIB 6" GP100 for a little under $500 about 8 months ago.

i got a stainless gp for my father in law for 200.  the guy who sold it to me was having an estate sale for his wife's recently deceased brother.  the husband and wife both hate guns, so they were selling them all.  this one, the cylinder latch retaining spring was put back in wrong, so they thought it was broken, that's why the price was so low.  my gunsmith put it in right and the gun shoots great.  it is slicker than snot, way smoother than my blued 4" gp, which is 9 years old. that's probably the best deal i have ever got on a revolver.
