I have a 788 left hand with a 4X scope, is it a factory package
« on: January 13, 2008, 02:18:59 AM »
I bought my son a left handed REMINGTON 788 IN .308 for Christmas. It has a 4X scope. The Blue Book says there was a year or two when the scope was part of a package deal from Remington. Can anyone tell me what scope was used? I found a LH 788 like it on line with a price tag over $1.000. What are they really worth? Also is has a 20" barrel, would that indicate it is a carbine? Thanks for the help, Shotgunner

When I bought my right handed 788 around 1978/79 it came with a 4x Tasco scope as a packaged deal.  I have since replaced the scope and it is on a .22 rimfire.

What kind of scope?  Anyway, I think I'd buy my son another rifle and shop that one to the collectors. It being a lefty and all.

The Standard Catalog of Firearms, 17th Edition has them as EXC-$500 VG-$425 Good-$375, also noted ADD 40% for left hand.  The carbine model was 18".  "This model has rapidly rising values and significant collectors potential."

I have several right handed copies, but I know that the left handed model also ejects from the right.  Kinda neat!

As I said, there is one like it on GunBroker listed a little over $1000, hasn't sold yet. I found one that sold for $700 a while back, in 6 mm. I am in the gun for a lot less. I might decide to list it, if the kid agrees, and use the money for a 700 LH, or perhaps a Ruger. The scope is a Bushnell 4X, I am still wondering if I should take the cheap scope off or leave it alone. I shot it today and it help the reputation of the 788s, thoough it didn't like the Hornady 150 sp. It did much better with a Speer Mag. tip. Shotgunner

Shotgunner, Even when the barrels are shot out of these the receivers are coveted by BR people for re-barrel.  A L/H probably even more.  But I wouldn't let any of mine go for any reason.  My .223 is my varmint rifle, the 7mm-08 and .308 are my version of mountain rifles, and I'm always looking to add one more anytime.  The kids can have my other Remingtons and Rugers, but they're on notice, they will never get the 788's ha ha.

Remington is notorious for using all different kinds of scopes for their package deals.

You never know if you are getting a Tasco, Simmons or Bushnell until it gets there.

Even Remingtons ads will only say it comes with a 3x9x40 scope.  Remington never lets out what make scope is coming through.  If you are in doubt, let the scope on the rifle until you  know for sure.

What you can do is go to the Remington website and look in the FAQ's.  You may have to start a search for what you want to find out, but most of the time it is in the archives some where.

If that doesn't work, you can ask Remington directly in their FAQ's.  They will ask you during your search if you found what you were looking for.  If you didn't, you can open a new question right to Remington.  Most of the time they answer you.

My guess is that unless you have the box that the rifle came in, putting a better scope on the rifle shouldn't negatively affect the value.  Just keep the old scope.

And if it was me, I'd let the kid keep it for himself, just like you intended when you bought it.
