5.6x45 brass
« on: June 29, 2003, 01:18:38 PM »
Hi all,
Can anyone tell me where I can get some of that brass? Either 5.6x45R or 5.6x50R. I understand it can be used for TCU cases
My .357max brass is not satisfactory. There is amost "no" neck. About .070 or .080 is all. This is when I use the standard 7tcu dies. I hope someone can help me. Thanks, Bobby

Bobby,

It is almost scary to reply to your post.  You have a lot of info kind of jumbled up in there.  You can not use a 5.6X50R brass for 7TCU.  It is rimmed.  7TCU is not.  7TCU is made with 5.6x45 (.223) brass.

The 7 super mag, 270 max and several other cases can be made with 357 max brass or 5.6x50R brass.  You have to anneal either one of them to successfully fireform your brass.

5.6x50R brass is available from several resources including Old Western Scrounger and Hirteners (sic).  S&B is making the ammo and importing it.  I have not been able to find any yet.  I got my small supply from a guy in Alaska and from a guy in Finland.

Thanks for taking the time to return my post. I guess I missunderstood about the 5.6x45R brass. I appreciate your taking the time to explain about the brass. I learn something every day. I imagine if I got it from "The Old Western Scrounger", it's going to be pretty expensive. We'll see. Thanks again Steve. Bobby

Bobby,

Huntingtons had 200 pieces a couple months ago left.  It is once fired 95% RWS 5.6x50R for $50/100.

Bobby,
I shot the 7mm TC/U for about 10 years.  I sold the barrel and dies earlier this year.  Same for the 6.5mm TC/U.  The casings that you want to use are Commercial .223 Remington brass.  The military brass will reduce your case capacity and varies quite a bit between different makes.  If the 7mmTC/U is what you are shooting, just buy some new COMMERCIAL .223 brass and neck it up in your dies, which should have a tapered expander for just this purpose.  You want to lightly lube the inside of the case necks with regular case lube or mica, lube the outside of the case as per normal reloading practice, you should also chamfer the inside of the case neck before sizing.  I typically trim the case necks to a uniform length after the cases have been fireformed, provided that trimming is not needed after the initial case forming.  If you loose quite a few cases using this process, you can anneal the case in the neck/shoulder area, but this shouldn't be neccessary.  If you've got any questions on this, let me know, it's very simple when you know what you've got to do.

Hi all,
Sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I've got the 7mmsupermag. It takes a rimmed case. Like .357 Max. Or 5.6x50R. Thanks for posting.

Bobby,

Since you are going to trim it, you may look at the S&B brass or the Hitenburg (sp).  They will be cheaper, I've found loaded 5.6x50R ammo for $10/box S&B.  The S&B and Hitenburg don't work as well for the Bellm cartridges because they have thinner necks but since your going to trim it, it may work better.  The RWS case is a very good case and will last longer than any other though.

contendernut,
Thanks for explaining about the brass. I looked up Huntingtons on the net, and they didn't have ANY brass, of any kind. All kinds of reloading  gear, but no brass. Could there be another Huntingtons?
  Thanks for trying. Bobby

I use the RWS brass for my 7SM.  It is much better, but takes LOTs of work to get it there.  Trimming, neck turning, annealing, etc.  I have found better consistency when making my brass by using a 7TCU full length sizing die first then the 7SM die.  Get a neck started before making the sharp shoulder.

Bobby,

Try emailing them or call and ask if they have any of the once fired brass left.  The URL is: http://www.huntingtons.com/

They show Hirtenberger 5.6x50R cases for 64/100 at http://www.huntingtons.com/CasesHirtenberger.html
