First match
« on: January 13, 2008, 04:36:20 AM »
I went out to the Haltom City rifle and pistol club to try my luck yesterday. Night before I was forced to endure a really fun bachelor party and was up late. initial info regarding match said be there at 8am and I was. Match didn't start till 12pm. Sure could have used a couple hours more sleep. Anyway I went to a restaurant ate breakfast, back to the range and helped set up targets and meet some of the members. Pretty good group. My friends show up and we practice a bit. I had sighted my rifle 3.6 inches high at 50 yards hoping it would be dead on at 100 meters with my match ammo and it was. I shot at all the targets trying to figure out where to hold at he various ranges. My only excuse is that I had never fired my Contender Carbine offhand before that day and I was not feeling all that well (hung over). I overshot a lot of the chickens because I wasn't sure how low to hold with the 100 meter zero, I hit 11 pigs, the turkeys also gave me trouble as I didn't have the holdunder figured out just yet and I got 5 rams. 22 hits first time out. My back is a bit sore from the standing position but I had a great time. Going to try to break 30 next time.

It sounds like you are using a scope and not adjusting it during the match.  You may want to try making it ,right on, at the pig distance ,60 M, and you should be able to shoot the chickens at the same setting.  Then hold over for the turkeys just over the back and then the rams just over the head.  This sometimes works depending on what ammo you are using

I am using a 3x9 power Bushnell Banner. Set at 8x the upper duplex post is an inch or so above the point of the post for the chickens, dead on the point for the pigs, Turkeys are dead on between the crosshairs and point of the post and dead on the crosshairs at the rams. I needed this match to find this out and I need to do some rifle adjustments to improve fit along with some trigger work before the next match not to mention no whiskey the night before.

I changed the way I sight in for matches and it works better. I sight dead on for the turkeys, the chickens get a bullet strike a little more than an inch high so I aim at the point where the legs meet the body, center hold for pigs and turkeys and I hold my horizontal crosshir even with the top of the rams horns. This works out way better. I shot a fun match saturday and got 43 out of 60, shot two regular matches sunday and got 33 out of 40 the first match and 28 out of 40 the second. The wind really picked up during the turkeys and rams, gusting more than 20 mph. Also I made several hits on the rams that didn't fall down on both matches.

What size are the animals - Smallbore or Pistol? I've never seen a ringer on an SB ram. Seen many turn/spin from edge hits

The sunday matches used pistol targets, a little easy if you get them to fall down.

With a Lever gun (22 or pistol caliber) and iron sights on pistol size targets a few local shooters use Kentucky windage most have settings fr each animal. For smallbore or HP silhouette using hold over is pretty tough. All shooters I know have accurate sight settings for each animal

For the first three targets the trajectory is pretty flat, the bullet hitting a inch high at 40 meters almost dead on at 60 and dead on at 77. I hold the horizontal crosshair even with the top edge of the rams horn at 100 meters so I have good aiming points. Once I start breaking 50 on the 60 target course I will get a good target style scope and start clicking.
