Black-hills .223 55gr SP. What Powder?
« on: January 13, 2008, 07:25:45 AM »
Does anyone know what powder Black-hills uses in their .223 55gr SP with cannelure?   ???

I'm trying to duplicate this load as my Handi (1/12 twist) will shoot one ragged 5 shot hole with these (if I do my part).
I have tired 25gr of Varget (Which is obviously NOT the right powder). I can only get my groups down to 1-1/2" (higher grain loads are larger groups).
Is the right powder the Winchester (or Hodgdon) 748?

most will use a blend of powder we can not buy, black hills may also.
If the powder is a ball powder like 748 you could try different ball powders and the safe loads
for each and see what they do for you. It's not a good idea to try to id powder my the looks.

That is pretty much what I figured, but since they are small (sort of), I hoped they may use some off the shelf stuff. I will play with the Winchester 748 and some IMR 4026 (IIRC) and see what I can work up. I have my 45gr HP and SP worked up to exceed the factory ones my rifle likes so well (Varget worked well for these). I hope I can work one up with these 55gr that my rifle will like also.

CCi 450 primers behind some WW748 is an excellent place to start.  A guy on the TC rifle forum up the page a bit has equaled or exceeded my 748 loads with a helping of Benchmark.  2230 will likely give you the highest velocities but not necessarily the best accuracy.

Try some H335.  That BHA is some good brass.  If yours has a small shield to one side of the head stamp, it's made by Lapua.  Lotsa good powders for the .223. You'd be better off trying to match the bullet.

You really need a crono to get on the same page as Black Hills Ammo. Shoot a few of theirs, then try to match the results, within the max limmits of that powder. You will prouably find that,a number of diffrent powders will come close,or match their performance. Then it's just a matter of which one gives the best accuracy, and Bingo! Your there. ;) Ron

Update:

I found the load I was looking for, just shy of the max for this powder for this load. Both my Handi and my AR15 really like it.
Now I need to to start a work-up for my 45gr SP bullets. ;D
Thanks for all the ideas and encouragement. I think my main problem was my frustration with NOT getting good results out of Varget (which everyone around these parts just seems to love for everything).

Must be an ELECT thing , i'm an inside wireman and have not been impressed with the results that Varget gave in my Handi 223 but it just loves IMR4895 and the 55gr Hornady V-max .

Funny how different the same model gun can be. My Handi Ultra Varmint 223 consistently gave me <1 MOA w/ Varget and 55gr FMJBT. The Varget also metered consistently in my Lee Autodisk Pro.

I'm with Stimpy about Varget. I use quite a bit of it when I'm feeling lazy about working up a hunting load or such because it does meter good and it is a good all around powder but when I'm  really serious, I've yet to try it in a cartridge that I couldn't find another powder that wouldn't do the job better.

Of the powders I have tried, the IMR 4198/4895 powders have worked best in my ARs. The Handy rifles should perform best with the bullets under 55gr with that 1-12 twist. Guess the 55gr should do ok if driven fast enough to stabilize.
