22-250 advice for new reloader
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:14:48 AM »
My brother-in-law recently gave me his equipment and with his assistance, hope to get started within the next few weeks.  I am shooting a Remington VSSF 22-250 and have been shooting factory Hornady 50 gr. V-Max Moly with good success.  To learn the process, I have bought  Hornady 50 gr. V-Max Moly bullets and Varget powder.  Any suggestions for loads with this combination or other bullets, powders and loads to try will be appreciated.

Haven't had a 22-250 for quite awhile but when I did a 55 gr Hornady SX over 34.0 grs of H-4895 would go into 3/4" @ 100yds.  Substituting the Sierra 52 gr. BTHP would get it down to 1/2".  R-P brass and CCI 200 primers were used.  The rifle was a Rem M700 with sporter wt. bbl and a 4X Bushnell Banner.  Hodgdon shows a max of 35.5 grs with the current powder but if I were to get another 22-250 the above load is were I would start. Have Fun.

I have the same rifle 700 vssf rem. Mine has a timney trigger and now resides in a Choat sniper stock.

The bullet listed will shoot great in your rifle. About all of the 50 to 55 gn bullets should, also try some 60 bal. tips . Balistic tips and Hornady V max are my favorite bullets for about everything. Varget powder works very well in the 250 , But you should try some H380 and 414 . Man go out and get a pound of everything and a couple of boxes of every bullet made and try it all. . That is what reloading is all about. experimenting and trying different tricks to improve.

Even tho Bro-in Law is helping you, I'd still get a reloading book or two and read them before I tried anything.

You can't beat Hornday's V-max bullet!  Varget is a great choice.  In my .22-250, W760, H380, and IMR4064 also work very well.  My most precise load is a 50 grain V-Max ahead of W760 and a CCI200 primer.

Thanks for the help, I can't wait to get started.  And beemanbeme, brother in law also gave me four reloading books for Christmas.  I am reading thru those as we speak.  Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

I have no experience with moly but the word on the street is that you can't switch from moly to non-moly without a complete cleaning of your barrel.  So if you're using moly bullets you kinda got to stick with moly bullets. You'll find the 52, 53, and 55gr bullets will shade the 50's when you get downrange even tho they start out a bit faster.
I like ball powder because it is so easy to work with. And my choices in desending order are H-380, H414, and Varget.

I have a 22-250 Rem LVSF.  For some reason I seem to have better luck with the 55 grain bullets than 50 grainers.  And have had real good luck with Tac, Varget and Reloader 15.  Actually I would prefer to shoot 50 grain bullets but she won't have it  ???

I suggest you do some research on Moly coated bullets before continuing to use them.

Thanks Savage.  Looked into it.  Had never heard that.  Gonna rethink the moly.
