a new way to hunt coyotes
« on: January 15, 2008, 06:06:05 AM »
i been working on a super slingshot and i think i have it. i got some black spear gun bands and used them on my marksman slingshot and make a new slingshot i call the coyote starker(sounds cool and the other name i was looking at was varminter)  well this sling can shoot a 180gr ball at 675-700fps ( very hard to draw to get full power) and i tested it out on coons, nutra, and a bever and it did the job. maybe i will try it out on yotes cause a big bore airgun can shoot a ball at about the same speed and it for big game.

you ever try a blowgun for stuff like this?  cause with all that hot air you got i would think 1000fps would be do-able.    :D

do the math 180gr round ball going at 675fps =150 ftp of power. the old sling only got 60ftps of power.

If you want to shoot a round ball at something why don't you use a hawken muzzleloader? Next thing you know people are going to try to say we need to use slingshots against snipers in Iraq.

it's legal here for non-game and pest but the slingshot is a tool for small game hunting. I did kill a coyote a long time ago with my less powerful sling and needed some help killing it but this new one is way more powerful. Way i do do it i going to have someone back me up with a gun just in case. It's has so far killed coons and beaver at 30 yards and that's pretty good for one of these. if you go to http://www.primitivesupply.com/gallery.cfm there pic's of a deer and turkey killed with a slingshot.

yeah, i have used slingshots as well.  recently, i shot a red squrriel (redious annoyous myronmanous treeratious) with a marble sized rock at a distance of ten feet, square in the chest, and he ran to the top of the tree and just sat there on a branch for the rest of the day.  when he sees me now, i know which one he is,  cause he tells me what he thinks of me!!  if a squrriel takes a hit from that and keeps on ticking,  good luck with a yote.  i doubt you could even get close enough. they are very elusive.  i have killed alot of stuff since i started hunting, with many different weapons.   never have bagged a coyote yet.
however,  i agree that it is good to see you using your mind.

For the record I am not trying to be disrespectful of anyone but I am just trying to understand why someone would use a slingshot to hunt yotes. I wouldn't really consider it creative. Creative is a bow or a crossbow (where legal), or a muzzle loader even as I suggested before. And I just don't get people who go and do things that they know may not be right just because it may not be illegal in their area. I mean if it were legal to hunt a deer with a .25 acp in your area would you go and do it just because it was legal? I would sure as heck hope not because it is severely underpowered for such a large animal. That is basically my point. You yourself ,jamaldog87, admitted that the slingshot is for small game hunting... I really don't think a coyote is considered small game a pest yes but I am sure there is a grey area there somewhere though. Even when using a superduper slingshot like you claim to have. I personally don't consider a whopping 150 ft/lbs a consistent coyote dropping amount of power. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't waste a lot of energy worrying over it lawdog. Considering the fastest compound bows shooting the lightest carbon arrows have yet to reach that magical 400 fps mark, I find it very hard to believe that a slingshot would fire "any" projectile 650+ fps. More closer to maybe 250 fps from my experiments with a chrono.

thanks for your thoughts on it. the slingshot is a small/ varmint tool but i can with the right kind of bands(as http://www.primitivesupply.com/gallery.cfm  shows) be a powerful tool. the that the fun of a slingshot is the home made-ness of it and the creative of the person who uses it. I have used my .22LR on coyotes and a shotgun and i also have a bow but i just going to try and see what it can do. The real reason i made the coyote stalker(that what i call it) was for a light non-game and fur-bearers closes to homes hunting weapon. there a lot of really good places to hunt varmints(rock-doves, nile lizards , beavers) but you can't use a .22 or airguns so i wanted something that can be put in a fanny pack but kill a beaver. so i made it. If you do hunt small game with a slingshot get daisy poweline bands becuase they can shoot a 38cal steel ball at 400fps and a reg band like my marksman bands go at 300fps( that what it says on the box and i have chrono the powerline thats how i know the FPS.) I am just like the people who like to try new things. the reason why a slingshot can go faster then a bow is because the slingshot fires a heavy-vary haevy round at slow to med fast speed  and it's only has that high speed for 12-20 yards maybe. 20 yards is about the best you can get out of a reg. store bought slingshot with a 38cal(45gr) ball. the bow will always win over a slingshot for med game like coyotes but a slingshot can come close or be in the running with a bow.

Everything he posts is far fetched.  It's creative because we suspect he's making it all up.  For a while he would post pictures of guns he "owned" but would link to retailers pictures and so forth.  He has claimed that someone gave him a full auto something or other.  Once he posted a pic of a few handguns that he "owned" and the picture looked may too much like a police evidence photo for me to ignore (I'm an attorney so I've seen my share of evidence photos).  I searched the file name and found that picture listed by several people on snapfish, all in conjunction with gangs, police, and/or drugs.  Despite the many fanciful tales he has never posted a picture of himself with any of the game. Every time he uncorks a new story he gets suspicion and criticism, but he always come back with a new one.  Most of his stories wind up in my threads... If you want more to read check the Hunting and Shooting section.  Most people are on to his game and just ignore it.

Sounds like a damn stupid and painful thing to do to a coyote.  If you're going to kill something, KILL IT.  Don't pussyfoot around with kid's toys.  If you feel the need to get real creative, maybe try it with an atlatl and dart of your own creation.  At least an atlatl and dart are proven capable on animals that size.  Slingshot are not.

myronman, as far as it being possible to get close enough, I called about a 3 year old female up to about 7 feet, last year laying in about 6" high winter wheat. She came about 300 yards to get to me, and I was laying in the middle of 300 acres of wheat. Yes, my camo was working quite well. I didn't use a sling shot on her, I used an M4, BUT, I don't see why it couldn't be done. They've been runnin sticks thru game for centuries and calling it archery, so why not a slingshot.
If his slingshot chronographs at that speed it should work, IF he can get close enough. Your experience with YOUR slingshot on the squirrel sounds like your slingshot may be on the wimpy side.

I too have killed a lot of stuff since I started hunting. About 52 years ago. I started calling coyotes in 1969, and the first one I shot was less than 15 yards. I have sold my varmint rifle and gone back to a leveraction in 357 mag. It put the hunting back in hunting. I think it is ADMIRABLE to increase the level of skill, by using something as primitive as a slingshot. If he gets it done, he will be far and above, most hunters skills. Killing coons with them is pretty good.
His english and spelling may not be very good, but he's long on try, and patience, and he sure is generous to a fault with the sarcasm level here, on this thread. JMO

No worries DK. I've been reading, being amused, and laughing at this crazy stuff for a long time. In the beginning, I sincerely felt a bit sorry for the boy, and wished I could do something for him. I literally layed in bed at night, and thought how nice it'd be to take the boy on an actual hunt, or fishing or something, so he could really experience some of the stuff he makes up here. After a while though it became painfully apparent that he not only knows he's full of it, but I feel like he's posting all this stuff just for the purpose of seeing all of us scramble to call it for what it is. In short, I think he's sitting back laughing his tail off at the reaction he gets here.

If I'm right, I'd say he's not a kid at all. I'm figuring he's probably 20-30 years old, heck, maybe even 60 years old, and just posting this stuff for kicks. What a life!  ::)

If he's not an adult, then he's obviously in grade school, and lacking cable TV. I'm sure Nickelodeon, and Disney would eat up too much of his time to allow him to fabricate such far fetched stories, and ideas....
