Squirrel Sniper
« on: January 15, 2008, 01:49:12 PM »
Hello,

Last night I drilled and tapped my M1969.

Here's the setup I have on it now.  It's 19*F and I'm going to try to site it in.  Can't find my bore sighter, but that's ok.

If I do well, I'll post groups here.

Later...

It seems to like Remington subsonics the best.  I tried CCI subsonics, but they seem to shoot to a way different point of aim than everything else.  But, by the time I got through with the Remington and Federal stuff, I was pretty worn out.  I shot one huge group with CCI Mini-Mags, then settled down and shot almost as well as with the Remingtons.  I think that if I started out fresh, the CCI Mini-Mags would tie for accuracy with the Remington subsonic.

I really need to get more CCI Mini-Mag Hollowpoint to try - I found I'm almost out, not enough to sight in, and I don't feel like running back into town.

I really hope I'm wrong about the CCI subsonics shooting funky, because I do want a subsonic HP load that shoots well, and someone on another board says that according to his tests, the Remington stuff doesn't expand - and it's the only subsonic that doesn't.

Any more info on them expanding or not, anyone?

Here are the pics, both Remington subsonic HP 40gr loads at 50 yards:

Not quite sighted in...

... and BINGO!

Not bad for leaning over a truck hood... :)

I think it's like a law of nature or something that when you're shooting for accuracy, three out of five rounds will touch and two will fly.  I don't like this and really have to get it figured out.  My Mosin does the same thing.

The 'scope is something in and of itself.  I've never heard of the company - FM - but it seems to be a quality product.  I'm hoping it's a relatively unknown company that's selling their products cheaply (about $50 for this fixed 4x lighted reticle version) that will end up doubling in price once a good reputation is established.

I'm also looking forward to trying out this lighted reticle.  I have my choice of green or red, with five intensity settings on each.  I put a 'scope on nearly every .22 I owned - heck, Dad 'scoped my first Daisy BB gun for me! - and there have been several times when a lighted reticle would have been handy.

I've never had a 'scope where there was a manual adjustment for yardage either.  Parallax adjustment, or what?  Anyone?

Hopefully I'll get to shoot some more .22 ammo tomorrow, and find an reliable expander that this rifle likes.

Great shooting! What make is that rifle? Yes, the adjustment in the front of the scope is to dial out parallax. It may not be exact, as indicated by it's markings. Next time you shoot at say 50 yards, play with the adjustment and see how it goes. With the rifle supported, and the crosshairs on the bullseye, move your head around a bit, to see if the crosshairs stay centered-if so, no parallax.
Keep trying different ammo.

Hello,

The rifle is a Romanian M1969 training rifle, military surplus, 1971 build.

I've heard an unsubstantiated rumor that these were made by CZ under contract.  I can't verify this, but it would explain a great many things, including accuracy.

Where did you get the Romanian trainer and how much are they?

Hello,

I'm sorry I'm so late on this.  I'm posting due to possible widespread interest.

The answer is that they're hard to come by any longer.  I got mine a few years back at the gunstore.  They were plentiful then.  Then people discovered that they could win rimfire matches in near stock form and they were all bought up.  I believe supply has dried up too.

If you can find one, I'd highly recommend it.  Count on paying twice as much as you would have years back.  Still a bargain, but they've risen in price like the SKS.

After trying tons of different ammo in my 22's, Savage, Marlin 60, and two Ruger 10/22's, I've narrowed my selections down to PMC Moderator sub, Aguila SE sub, Remington sub, and CCI sub for 1/2 inch or less groups at 50 yards.  All my guns also like CCI Green Tag, CCI SGB, and Winchester Super-X which will hold 3/4 to 1 inch groups at 50 yards and occasionally a little less.   I've never heard the Remington's don't expand before.  Could be true but they sure kill squirrels dead.  Wolf subsonics shoot well in my guns but they don't extract as well in the bolts and the autos often don't spit the empties all they way out causing a stovepipe.
