Advice on bullet

I'm going on a spring black bear hunt in Montana this year. I have a browning blr .308. I would like to use a 160 gr. bullet. Is a sierra hpbt good enough? I don't see a point in buying a premium solid copper bullet if a sierra would work. I don't follow all the hype about a Magnum cartridge or a super expensive bullet. I think accuracy is key. Any thoughts?

 I like the 308 & have 3. I would load a 165grn Partition for your 308 & make sure you can put the bullet right where you need to. You could practice with cheaper ammo/bullets & do a final zero check with your hunting rounds before the hunt. Western spring bear hunting sounds like a longer shot opportunity than the bait pile methods. My bear setup is 180grn partitions out of a 300WSM.

My guess is it'll do just fine......

I've got to agree with you......put the bullet where it needs to go and it'll do the job.......

I like Sierra bullets but for black bear, I don't thing the hollow points would be my choice.  I think they are a bit too frangible if the bullet hits bone and may not penetrate into the vital areas.  I think you would be better serviced with a core and cup soft point.

If you want a standard bullet that is an effective, inexpensive, deep perpetrator for the 308 Winchester, try a CoreLokt in 165 or 180 grain. These can be bought in bulk quantities for a reasonable price. My hunting buddy has shot dozens of deer with the 180 in 308 at ranges to 200 yards. Total penetration was always the rule at any angle. Postmortem during the butchering process verified this.

I wouldn't use a hollow point.  Where in Montana are you going to be hunting?  Are you going to be around grizzly?

I believe that bullet is target bullet. I'd use their 165gr btsp gameking if its spot and stalk.

This is a comment I read on that bullet. 

"Its good ballistic shape and relatively light weight make it a good choice for target shooting and plinking at short to medium ranges."

That is not a bullet I would go bear hunting with.

  In a .308 Win. for blk. bears, i'd also use a Nosler Partition in 165 grain...  or if i wasn't going with that tough of a bullet, i'd step up to 180's in a std. bullet...

  I always had better luck with Speer bullets on big game, than Sierra'a...
