Quiz Your Self
« on: January 16, 2008, 08:17:09 AM »
I got a call the other night from a guy who I had taken care of a beaver problem for a couple years back. Seems the beaver moved back in again and are cutting his trees.  So not being truly a beaver trapper I sat down and made a list of things I needed to set his place up. Like I said I had taken beavers out of there a couple years back so I had a good idea what to expect.
I went out this morning figuring to set up for the beavers pretty much the same as I did last time. Using baited 330's I took 5 from the location last time and all activity stopped.
OK
So here is the quiz!
I took my list of gear and loaded out the truck, but after getting on the ice and starting to set things up. I realized I was missing (Two Very Important) pieces of equipment to handle the 330's.
What Two Items  that could have been very Critical to my setting. Did I Forget To Put On My List and Not have With???? They will definitely be with me when I go back to check the traps.

Here is my list.

Tote full of 330's
Ice Spud
Hatchet & Machete
Wire & Cutters
Gauntlets
Pack Basket

Not listed but items I had with, some what relative to going but not part of setting, so they are not the two items I'm looking for.

Tire chains for the tuck
Shovel
Drinking water
An assortment of clothing
Sunflower seeds to spit so I can follow my back trail home LOL!

There is no prize for getting this right.
Just something to thaw January brains. LMAO!

I thought lure didn't work under the ice?? you been holding out info on us? If your just talking bait I cut green willow on site.
I'm not going to post just yet what I left behind till some of these other guys take a guess.
But I will say I bought one of the items from you several years ago, the other I've had since the 70's.

Setting tongs,  ice scooper, Saftey spikes to be able to pull yourself out of ice you just fallen thru, cardboard to cover hole so you dont have to  find a evergreen tree or marshgrass to cover hole..  I have to go to an instructor appreciation dinner , will think for awhile... Since no  prizes for winner, i will just accept your   accolade for me being right!

 Tom

A safety is the main one. safety and a length of rope for self extraction. I got slapped across the knuckles a couple weeks ago because my safety was in my pack was 15' away and I was to lazy to go get it.

Believe it or not I usually don't carry ice picks when trapping on the ice although I have a couple different styles and several pairs.  I do wear a float coat most the time when on the ice or water trapping. I carry a spud bar and sound the ice ahead as I go don't wander much if I have'nt sounded. I did think about taking and ice scooper but also don't use one of them unless cutting ice with the chain saw.
I was luck on this sight the ice was maybe six inches thick and I popped it real nice with the spud. Also was not to worried about hard freeze back so I just kicked snow over everything. That may change before I go back on Saturday because their talking -15 tonight.
I was out with a friend in the boat today fishing in the snow storm. Would never have gotten the boat in and out without 4 wheel and chains. With no heat in my garage and the dropping temps it's going to be a bit before the 4 inches of ice on the transom of the boat falls off. We did end the day with 2 nice saugers, 2 walleyes and a northern but took a beating catching them. With the dropping temp my guess is where we were today with the boat will be froze solid by morning.

I guess more people are interested in just looking at this post then playing my game, no big deal I should have had a prize LMAO!

So I have to say that Tom Got it right,,right off.

Going out to set coni's as big as 330's with out some type setting tool and a safety catch can be out right dangerous.
I remembered to take both with today while checking and I'm glad I did.
I didn't get any beavers this trip but did have one very flattened muskrat in a 330.
330's are not as nice to deal with when wet and it's below zero then they were the first dry setting.  I actually had the trap fire twice while resetting but the safety caught it making it real easy to deal with.
I cleaned more ice out of the trigger reset it and I didn't even get slapped. I will admit I still cussed some when it fired.
