22' barrel short for 45-70

Ive been thinking about getting me a larger caliber gun for deer hunting in georgia. I finally got my heart set on NEF/H&R 45-70 single shot. But my question is that it has a 22' barrel on it. Is that too short, and wouldnt that make a 45-70 lose accuracy at say 150-200 yards? but i was noticing that the marlin lever actions also had a 22'' barrel or a 18" barrel. Any ideas???

H&R 45-70s also come in the 32" BC or the new 24" SS Ultra, but 22" is a great length for the 45-70, considering it's a 150-200yd round anyway, the extra barrel isn't gonna make a flat shooting, long range chambering out of it anyway if you look at it compared to a modern bottle necked chambering. I get about 150-200fps out of the 10" longer BC barrel, the 4" difference isn't gonna make too much difference.  Be sure to check out the NEF/H&R Centefire forum, lots of info on H&Rs, more than you can imagine. ;)

I have the NEF single shot short bbl and love it.  Its dead on past 100 yds.  I reload 300 gr bullets too.  Packs a whallop! OUCH !!  :o  :o

Cap'n Jon, I see you are from the U.P., well I have to tell you buddy, the road, the trees, the snow, the pickup, and the snowshoes in the back of the truck, it sure looks exactly like where I hunt in Maine, especially this time of year when we go out hunting and calling for coyotes, it makes me want to head up to the camp right now!!! I want to add my thoughts about the 22" barrel in an H&R/NEF 45/70. I have a couple in that configuration plus a 32" Buff Classic. Both are fine guns, the 22" barrel in the 45-70 shoots just great, is very accurate, and is  a very handy handi ( ;D) both when walking in the woods or sitting on stand. I say go for it, buy the 22" H&R/NEF 45-70. It is truly a great gun and I am sure you will be happy with it. I also predict you will not stop with just one Handi, they are an affliction (Handiholicism) many of us are very happy with....<><....:)

I surplused a bunch of my Handi barrels a while back and the only one I kept was the short 45/70 and I also have a 1895 Marlin in this caliber.  The short barrel doesn't shoot quite as well as the marlin but is great to take to the woods.  Unless you are into long range target shooting I think you will like the short barrel.  If you have been reading this forum for a while you will notice that this barrel is one that practically no one has anything bad to say about it.

If you familarize yourself with it the shorter barrel is no hinderance to accuracy.

Here's my H&R 1873 Springfield Calvary in 45-70 with std 22" barrel.

The 22" barrel is much handier for most deer hunting than the long barrel. It's harder to manuver in a blind, shoot house or tree stand. I have several of the longer barrels and one of the 22". I am willing to put up with the longer barrel because I like them, but to be honest, the 22" is really more practical.

Yes it is a little short if you are using BP... otherwise it is a great choice.

Heck, if you think 22" is short, you should see my Marlin 1895G (18.5"), or better yet, my T/C Super 16 Carbine (16.25").  ;D  Both will sling some lead out there with some authority.

I think that the 22" barrel is right for modern round, but the longer 32" barrel on the Buf-clasic is for for the guy that shoots black powder.
In some states you can use any gun that shoots black powder during black powder season. (Unlike muzzle loader season)

I'm with njanear. If you are hunting heavy cover, the law is the limit, can't get too short. Length don't have much effect on accuracy, unless you the the speed for longer ranges. An 18" will be close enough at 200 yds as a 22". In past 45-70's I have had, my barrels ran between 25-35 fps per inch difference. Speed gets affected more with length than accuracy at normal ranges. If I build another 45-70, it'll be a 20" barrel, as I would use on the edges of heavy cover where the slightly longer shot be present itself.

I had a Ruger No. 3 Carbine in 45-70 with a 20 inch barrel I used as a camp cannon and scouting rifle.
Good gun, handy and packed a lot of power. 
Sold it back to the guy I got it from.  And have a 22 inch Marlin 1895 that seems a whole lot longer due to the receiver being 4 to 5 inches longer than the single shot.
You will be happy with it.
