Rem. 721 action (300 H&H) fit BDL stock?
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:49:17 PM »
Gents will a 721 action 300 H&H fit into a BDL stock.  I wonder if they are the same bolt center to center and outside action demensions?  Thought if it would work I could give a grand old gun a face lift.    Thanks  Buckfever

With a few modifications it will work. The bolt recess in the stock will have to be altered to fit the 721 bolt which is straight as opposed to the 700's curved handle. You will also have to inlet the stock for the rear sight boss on the 721 barrel.

Just be sure you start off with a BDL stock from/for a long action (.30-06 length), and not the short (.308 length) action.

THE BARREL FOR THE 721 MAGNUM CALIBERS ARE LARGER IN DIAMETER THAN A 30 / 06 BARREL AND WILL NOT INTERCHANGE WITH OUT A WHOLE LOT OF WORK BEING DONE TO THE STOCK.

YOUR BEST BET IS TO CONTACT THE SPONSOR OF THIS SITE AND BUY A CUSTOM MADE STOCK FOR YOUR RIFLE - IF THAT IS THE ROUTE THAT YOU WISH TO GO.

YOU ALSO HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THE MODEL 721 DID NOT COME WITH A DROP PLATE - MAGAZINE - ALL THEY EVER HAD WAS THAT UGLY STAMPED STEEL FLOOR PLATE.  IT IS LARGER THAN THE MODEL 700 AND THERE IS EVEN MORE WORK TO BE DONE TO MAKE IT FIT.

I AM SURE THAT GUN STOCKS INC CAN MAKE YOU A STOCK THAT WILL FIT YOUR RIFLE WITH MINOR MODIFICATIONS FOR A VERY REASONABLE PRICE.  THE ONES I LOOKED AT FOR MINE WAS AROUND $120

The M700 long action and the 721 are nearly identical. The triggers have some cosmetic differences and the bottom metal is different. Stocks will interchange with some inletting.. The standard calibers have slightly smaller diameter barrels but the magnum M700's are the same..within normal tolerances. You might consider replacing the 721 bottom metal with a M700 unit, either the standard M700 or the M700 DBM. I bought one of the latter with 2 mags for under $30 and it fit my 721 just fine. I didn't to open the barrel channel as it started as a 721 in 30-06 and I installed a custom 270 barrel.. If you're handy at all opening a barrel channel is quite simple. Yhe change in the bottom metal is more difficult unless you swap in a M700 unit..
