New 22 Hornet with ejector
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:38:50 AM »
I had sent in Nov 5 for a 444 Marlin barrel and a 22 Hornet Super lite barrel. I got them back night before last (15th). The frame came with the 444 Marlin barrel on it with the 22 Hornet barrel in the box. Last night I put the 22 Hornet barrel on to see which fore end would fit best (I ordered 5 of them). To my surprise the 22 Hornet barrel was an ejector barrel. When I opened it up for the first time I heard the familiar click. I then opened several more times and sure enough it is an ejector. I thought they had run out of those some time back.

Lucky you buddy, you should run right out and buy a lottery ticket!!! I understand they are selling off the older (and more preferred by most) ejector fitted barrels, therefore something as specialized as an Ultra Light .22 Hornet barrel may have still been in stock. Count your blessings buddy and say a little thanks for it, you have a real winner there!!! It will much more valuable than a cheaper extractor fitted barrel as time goes on and ejector fitted barrels become harder and harder to come by, unless of course Quick's quest to convert extractor barrels to ejector barrels works out. Of course you would still have a ORIGINAL ejector fitted barrel, a thing to treasure forever....<><....:)

No surprise there, as I've stated before numerous times, there are a few barrel offerings that are from old inventory that have ejector underlugs, when they deplete that stock, they're gone forever. 223 Superlights and 450 Marlin are a couple that may still be available as ejectors, as well as the 22 Hornet Superlight, so if you want one, better order it, or plan on converting it. ;)

unless of course Quick's quest to convert extractor barrels to ejector barrels works out.

That project has been completed with 100% success, it's an easy conversion as long as the parts are available.

I don't get this, my Hornet does also have a ejector fitted, does this makes it rare...?

Johny S.

No its not rare. They just switched from ejectors to extractors in the last year or two.  I bought my Hornet new  1 1/2-2 years ago and it has ejectors which work pretty well for the rimmed Hornet cartrige, although I occasionally get a stuck case even with that.

Personally, be it ejector or extractor I would not loose any sleep over it.

Just a couple years ago on this forum most were in favor of NEF switching to extractors     ;)

I have to take you to task for that last statement buddy, there were the FEW disgruntled but loudl and repeatedly c,omplaining members that were often instructed by other members they could avoid stuck shell cases simply by keeping a clean, smooth, dry, and polished (if necessary) chamber. Those steps wouldhave avoided stuck cases for them, but all some of them did was to complain, as a result the MINORITY of members caused this very bad change to affect all of us. Isn't this just like the good old USA in many areas today, the MINORITY seems to rule and make decisions  that affect all of us. The MAJORITY of members then and now still wish we had ejectors on our Handis. There are many of us, myself included, who do not own or do not wish to own an extractor fitted Handi barrel. Barrels fitted with ejectors always sell for more and quicker than extractor fitted barrels and always will. I have not purchased, and will not purchase a .44 Mag barrel (or any other extractor barrel) until the mechanism is modified to be more user, hunter friendly. Tim (Quick) has developed a method of converting a cheaper extractor barrel to an ejector barrel so there is some hope for those of us that are mechanically inclined and have the proper machinery. A great big thanks to Tim for that. As often happens a loud vocal minority has made it bad for the majority of us. Besides the company seeing an opportunity to save some money by going to the cheaper extractors there was some concerns raised and spoken of by a FEW (again the disgruntled, foolish minority) members, and possibly company attorneys, that an ejected shell casing MIGHT be cause for a law suit against the company. The very small MINORITY of members here wanted extractors, the MAJORITY wanted and still want ejectors, but we all now suffer. The unfortunate result is we, the majority, all have lost and the product is cheapened, as well as sales being lost....<><....:(
