I have. I scouted and hunted hard last spring for these wild hogs, and was lucky enough to see things pay off when I came upon a sounder of about 20 of them at dusk one night. I killed 2 of them before the rest of 'em hauled axx for the next county. I'm a bit hesitant to give out my local, as I have spent countless hours researching info, talking to biologists in the know, and knocking on farmers doors to obtain permision to hunt the right lands.

Scouting

More scouting

The payoff. This boar dressed out at 110 pounds.

Photobucket was down at the time I read it. In fact photobucket is down a LOT. I still can't see the photo of your hog but this morning the other pics are showing and it's the only one that isn't.

My best friend shot one this deer season on his farm in Sauk county. He was completely shocked as he had never seen any hog or even sign of them there before. The boar  went , I believe, 147#.

That's not a hog! That's a Packer fan after a night of tailgating. Good luck in the playoffs. I saw a dead feral hog on I90 east of LaCrosse last summer or the summer before.

I'm afraid they'll be everywhere in a few years.  I remember reading on another forum about pigs and their survivability and ability to adapt to pretty much any environment.
Who would have thought turkeys would be as plentiful in the state?  The pigs are on the way :)

Trib, you are right, the hogs are here to stay. It's only a matter of when, not if, that hogs will be in all 72 counties of the state.

Their destructive nature aside, they do fill a hunting void between spring tukey and fall deer. Also now in winter. Just not this fridgid weekend.   ;D

I think it's interesting that despite the DNR's dire prediction that wild hogs will be a curse on Wisconsin, that it is difficult to find a private land owner  with wild pigs who will let people hunt them.  I suppose they are waiting for pig numbers to increase so they can submit crop damage claims.  Won't there be alot of screeching if the wild pigs become present in numbers sufficient to drive off the deer?

Maybe I'm wrong.  Let's see:   Are there any landowners in Wisconsin who have wild pigs on their land who will give permission to others to come on their property to hunt the wild pigs (free)?  Anybody currently have permission?

I sure wouldn't be offended if public land had a huntable pig population.  It would give us Wisconsin (gun) hunters something to do on those 340 days a year when there is no big game hunting in Wisconsin.  Something besides dropping a thousand (+) dollars in a western state or a game farm.

jcn59 and anyone else, Do you think the pigs would drive off the deer? It seems like on the hunting shows from down south, the 2 coexist together just fine.  I recall the talk that deer & turkeys couldn't exist together too, and that's proved wrong.
Anyone know more about the ability of deer and pigs to live in the same woods?

I can't wait until there are huntable numbers of Turkey's in Vilas county.  I have seen a few around where I hunt but I wouldn't call it huntable yet.  I don't know how they will cope with the winter which has produced quite a bit of snow in Vilas.  I think Hogs would be about the same, but I am not willing to have Hogs at the expense of deer.  If there is anyone around Vilas, or Oneida counties with Hogs and is willing to let me hunt I would be very appreciative.  Just send me a message.

Trib - A few years ago, I believe it was the "Year of the cat" on the spring ballot, the DNR folks said  we were heading towards a pig problem, & pigs would compete with deer for available food.  I don't know anything about pigs.  I believe they are omnivorous. I guess that means they will eat everything from deer fawns to acorns.  Either way it leads to fewer deer.

I wonder if wild hogs would eat wolves.....hmmmm......I better do more research.

Here is what I would do if I were you guys. Actually this is what I did,

Start out with a simple google search of "wisconsin feral pigs". You should find countless bits of information, including hits straight from the WDNR.  Find an area on this map were you'd like to hunt.

http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/Images/Publ/factsheets/pig/WisconsinFeralPigMap.pdf

Now start contacting the biologists of the area you intend to hunt. Ask where the recent sighting are of the hogs. Get out a gazatier and pinpoint where they supposedly are. If it's deemed they are living on private land, start knocking of doors and ask the farmers. I have had no problem obtaining permision to hunt private land, as most farmers want the hogs killed. It is common to have farmers tell ya no to deer hunting, but hogs are a different game. Now study your quarry well. Hogs are far more inteligent than most people think, and they have a much better nose that do deer. Know that hogs are strictly nocturnal, unless pushed or driven. They will come out at dusk, about when you start to see deer come out, and they'll be bedded back down come sun-up, and it'll be in the thickest nastiest place they can find. It is legal to shoot hogs at night with a rifle and a light, however the lights can only be used at the point of kill, not for locating. Scout scout and scout some more. In my experience, i have found plenty of fresh sign without finding the classic uprooting they are so well known for. Look for small creeks and streams with sandy or muddy edges so any tracks they may have made will be obvious. Hogs tracks are very similar to deer track, but deer are more pointy, while hog tracks have a gap in the front hoofs. Also, hogs will use trails over and over, much as deer do. Any trails you find going straight up a steep hill are likey hog trails, not deer trails. You can not bait for hogs, although the USDA will bait traps for them at times, so if you know of such a set up, I'd think you could sit on it and wait, but that's just my opinion. The scented products are legal, as with deer. Lots of hog scent products are out on the market, but I've little faith in them. Some folks swear by a product called "Black Gold", but I did not have any results when I tried it. You can get this stuff from http://www.texasboars.com/phpBB2/index.php The guy that runs that sight is friend with Graybeard here, so no pimping someones product worries here LOL. Plus that site has forums which can help, in addition to our own wild hog forum here at GBO.

While hunting at night, use your ears. I could not believe how much noise they make. So loud they even woke me up at 3 am while camped near them.

I am no final authority on Wisconsin hogs by any stretch, just telling y'all what worked for me. Good luck

Last spring there was an outbreak of pseudo rabies on pig farms in Clark County, near Greenwood.  The DNR has determined it was from nose-to-nose contact with wild pigs.
The article in the link below tells the names of the farmers and locations.  From there you can get a good idea of the area to try hunting.  Just beware that the farmers are sick of everyone and his brother asking to hunt on their land.  They don't believe there ARE any wild pigs in the area and get mad at hunters who will scare away the deer.

I have witnessed dozens of pigs crossing the ATV trails near rockdam in western Clark county.  All on the public land between Hwy H and Hwy M

back in the late 90's there were some boar stock that were allowed to escape their fence just east of medford.   word is they got into the black river bottoms.  i worked with a guy that used to hunt them.  my mom dated a man that lived in the area, and he used to say they were in the river bottoms yet.  i know from going to another area with hogs that the land owners dislike outsiders looking to hunt hogs more than they dislike the hogs.   to that end i have ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPATHY for the landowners whining about crop damage.   they arent looking to get rid of the hogs, they ARE looking for a handout from the state.    now if you can find hogs on the public ground in clark county,  rock out!  i never really looked into it much.
i focused on another area which apppears to be where 379peterbilt went.  looks the same anyway.  i found plenty of hog sign and am thinking on going back there this spring and trying a hunt.  he was dead on about the way to find an area to hunt,  all it take is some research and effort.
