Hi Toner Guy- things to consider when choosing between cals are recoil, how the cal stands up to wind, and cost of ammo. You are going to shoot a lot if the weather is right, and mostly in the wind. Heavy recoil all day can take some of the fun away and result in less accuracy. Recoil that takes you off of the target also makes it hard to correct for a miss on a second shot. Last year I used a 22 mag with the Federal 30gr hollowpoints early in the day for close targets, out to 150 or so with great success (zeroed at 125). I stepped up to a 222 next for 150 to 300 and had good luck with it as well. Both of those have hardly any recoil so you can see the shot impact which is half the fun. For longer shots I had both a 204 and a 22-250. The 204 recoils less than the 22-250,but is pushed around more by the wind, at least I thought so. However I'm going to have a better trigger in the 204 the next time which should help the accuracy. The 22-250 did ok at the longer ranges too, but the recoil did make it harder to stay on the target. I don't think I would try my 243 because the recoil would pull me off the target too much. All rifles except the 22mag had bull/target barrels, and a light crisp trigger is equally important along with a scope that remains clear at higher magnifications for those longer shots. Those are my thoughts after 1 trip. Note.....free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it!!!!!!! I do hope my ramblings were of some benefit.
I hope we both get on the list so I can meet you in OK.
