"School me" on the Encore and Contender, a boatload questions.
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:55:22 PM »
I was advised today to look into buying either an Encore or Contender for some of my shooting needs. I know nothing about either one, period. For starters what's the difference between the Encore and G2 Contender? What's the triggers like? I'm used to Timney drop-ins set at 1-2.5 lbs. Generally speaking how are they in the accuracy department? Every firearm has it's iffy and down right bad points. What's the T/C's bad points? Do the barrels really interchange effortlessly? how's T/C's quality control lately? Do you need a different frame for rimfires? How are the pistol vs rifle legalities handled? What's the generally suggested retail price for Encores and Contenders?

I don't even know where to start with this post.  I guess the best suggestion I have is for you to go down a couple of pages and read thru the posts.  I think you will find there is no shortage of opinions on most of your questions.  After reading then ask a few questions at a time.

You can also try searching.  I see that Matt has the search function turned on again.

I will try and answer some of your questions
The encore and G2 are to different frames The G2 is a light duty and has a selectable firing pin for center fire or rimfire rounds. The Encore is a heaver duty version and has only a firing pin for the center fire but you can buy off set pins or off set barrels to fire rimfire rounds from. you can get a lot more higher pressure rounds  for the encore.

For handgun VS rifle frames, this is a long battle and people have their own thoughts on the matter For me I do not want to be a test case I buy all frames as handguns. The ATF does not care if you take a handgun and turn it into a long gun. long guns being less restrictive however some states counties and even towns have other laws you need to check into. so do as you wish the only difference between handgun frame and long gun frame  is how T/C reported them to the ATF when it left the factory. And YES T/D does have a record of how a frame left the factory.

accuracy that is a hit or miss issue. it can be better then custom rifles or handgun or you can get a bad or just picky barrel and have good accuracy a lot goes into this such as headspacing rate of twist barrel lock up even how you tighten the forend screws and how well you can shoot.

My contender frame trigger pul is 31/2 LBS and my encore is between 3 and 31/2 depending on where I put my finger on the trigger.

the encore is a great rifle light and fast to handle no worries about left hand or right hand set up.

Do you see the little GOOGLE bar in the upper left corner of this screen?  To search the board, type in what you are looking for and leave the little box marked GBO (Graybeard Outdoors) turned on (instead of the Web one).  Simply click SEARCH and you will get your results.

Are aftermarket barrels better than T/C's own? I see that there a couple of companies that sell a variety of barrels and stocks.

I have had good luck with factory barrels, never having a problem getting one to shoot.  Others have.  In my case the main reason to get a custom barrel is to get something not available in a factory barrel such as a chambering unavailable from the factory, or a twist rate etc. that meets your needs.  Other folks wouldn't consider factory barrels acceptable and would not consider using them at all.  True custom barrels are going to cost more.  The only barrels that I know of that are cheaper are the Bergara barrels made in Spain to fit Encore's.  Early experience with them seems to be fine, but there aren't all that many out yet.

Right below the Google Search and above the rotating banner is a line of icons one of which looks like this: That would be the SEARCH feature.

I was not aware that the search feature was turned back on. I do believe it was not operational for a period of time. I will try it and see what I can find. Well the adventure begins, I ordered a T/C G2 Contender pistol frame (blued/walnut grips) from my local 'fun store'. Hopefully they get it ordered sometime soon, they have been known to drag their feet sometimes. When you order a frame from T/C does it come with the appropriate stock set?  For example does a pistol frame comes with a grip set and a rifle frame comes with a stock set?? They thought it would cost around $275-$300. The gun shop did not know.
