Speak now, or forever....
« on: January 17, 2008, 04:43:33 PM »
I've been debating on what I should get as far as a medium range carbine for awhile now. I think its gonna be a mini 14 ranch rifle. It won out over the NEF, the Mosin,SKS,and 30-30.
I'm going to get it tomorrow after work, unless someone talks me out of it.

Medium range being what? For me that's 300 to 600 yards...

For the price of the mini 14 you could have two SKS's or 3 to 4 Mosin's but DON'T get me wrong. The mini is a great gun. I've had two pass through my hands. My only complaint has been there accuracy. For me, if a rifle will not shoot 1 and 1/2 inch groups, I loose interest fast. Now the new Mini's are supposed to be much better. But the two I had back in the 90's were hard pressed to shoot under 3 inches scoped with quality factory ammo. I could get down to near 2 inches with my hand loads, but that didn't make me happy at the time. (this was all with the 223).  But that's what I get for trying to get match accuracy out of a battle type rifle.

For me medium range is to far to hit with a stick, but close enough you dont need a scope. The other choices I was considering are all good options and I will probably get around to expanding my collection later.

My grandson got one of these last year. If the grandson didn't like it so much, my son(the Marine) would have sold it or bent it around a pole somewhere. The grandson likes it because you can put a lot of ammo down range pretty quick. The Marine says you can't hit much of anything with it, no matter the ammo choice. It gets fed a steady diet of Wolf stuff now.

Personaaly, I'd look elsewhere, but that's just my opinion...

I got the .223 ranch rifle blue with wood stock. I just got back from the range in Texas
City. I put 50 rounds of old Remington soft points,40 rounds of steel case fmj,and 20 of monarch soft points through it. Feed everything perfectly. At 100 yrds with open sights I keep then in a 10" target. For me with open sights that is just fine. I really enjoyed the little rifle, and I think I'll probably keep it a long time. Anyone want to recommend  a fairly inexpensive (and rugged) scope? Whats a good load for game?

you will like that little rifle, now you need a mini thirty to go with it.they aint tack drivers but will supply good hunting accuracy and wont malfunction, or at least none of the 4 ive owned never has.if perchance you dont like it and you got it bought rite, just hang onto it for a year or two, they go up in value every year.
