good plinker load
« on: January 18, 2008, 07:14:02 AM »
I have a lot of brass for the 44 mag, I dont know how many rounds have been loaded in each. A friend gave them to me and said he used to buy reloads from the local gun shop but they closed their doors. i have cleaned and examined them. as far as i can tell they are in good shape my friend said they were light loads just for plinking. I was wondering if any one could recommend a moderate cheap load for this brass. they will be just plinkers, for trigger control practice. i would like to know what powder and would also like a powder that is impossible to double charge as it would over fill the case. i have cci large pistal primmers and would like to use them. so far i have only loaded with 24 grains of h110 and the hornady 240 gr. xtp, with great results (thanks graybeard for that load). I am afraid that this hot load may be to much for brass i know little about.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Look up loads for the .44 special and magnum with Trailboss powder, it is bulky and hard to accidently double-charge the cases.  Chuck Hawks has good information:  http://www.chuckhawks.com/trail_boss_powder.htm

I or we can't see your brass to look at it.
how does the head stamp look any markings that would indicate
they were loaded real hot to hurt the brass.
but unless it has been abused bad by over loads the first thing that
usually goes bad with this brass is the Mouthe's will start to split.
I used to have good luck with 15gr blue dot with lead semi wad cutters,
these powders are going to be over flowed if you double charge.
the ones you need to realyl look out for is like bullseye reddot 700x 231 etc these
you can some times get 3 charges in,say you used 6 gr win231 you could get 3 charges
in one case and didn't notice BAD THINGS HAPPEN.

if you worry about over charging , inspect a tray at a time so you can compare , if seeing is difficult drop a dowel in a known correctly charged case and mark it and check the rest with it !
i noticed with light loads , don't get to light or the case won't seal and alot of residue will come back in the chamber an be a mess for brass and cyl.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Why not go back to basics?  If your primers are of the standard variety, (CCI300) you would be well served with a moderate load of 2400 and a cast SWC of your own choosing.  A flashlight used for inspection one round at a time while in the loading block assures of no overloads.  A marked dowel works well also.
