want to try night coyote hunting/need advise
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:02:01 PM »
The area i live in seems to be plagued with coy dogs this year, so I added a night hunting permit to my hunting licence but have never hunted at night or spec. targeted coy dogs before ,I plan to more or less stay on my own land for safety, as i have been seeing the most sign in our corn field i,ll probably start there the law requires that I have a predator call with  me -any ideas on which to purchase i,m looking for the easiest to learn to use, also what type of light to use i,m looking for something I could mount on a rifle  also what would be the best choice between a ar15 colt match target which currently has a colt/realist 4x,a win m70 30-06 w/a lue 1.5x5 lighted rect.my current deer rig or a marlin 22mag ba w/a lue 3.5x10 on it max range would be about 200yds with75-100 more likely also how important is camo at night, thanks for any advise-tt

i have night hunted for Nile lizards at night and things get weird at night. Try a tri-rail( they sell them here http://www.leapers.com/pages/mounting_systems/tri-rail_mount.htm) cause you can have laser and light with a scope.

i wear camo even at night. im not into taking chances like that. at night i usually hunt with either a .22 hornet or a 12 ga shotgun. i mount a red light to ehatever i am hunting with and also carry a million candlepower spotlight with a red lens. whenever possible i hunt with a friend. one always has a rifle, the other a shotgun. 2 sets of eyes are better than one.

First, coydogs and coyotes are two different animals. 200yds is way past the 22mag range and unless I am absolutely sure of the back stop, I do not use a centerfire rifle at night. I set 100yds as my limit for night shots, because with a good light I can see what is attached to those two glowing eyes. At that distance a 22mag with the 1.5x5 lit reticule would work fine. Coyotes have the advantage during the day, multiply that by 100 at night. Get a Cass Creek electronic predator call. They work great.

At night, coyotes usually come to the call in pairs, the coyote that you see and the one that is already circling around you to see what is making the sound. When starting out 9 times out of 10 you will be found out before you ever see them. When you hit them with the red light, you have just a couple of seconds to get off the shot because now they know where you are. Your first outing should be under a full moon so you can see better, but remember, he can also see better. Wear full camo like you would turkey hunting.
Good luck, you will need it!

Thanks for the replies guys, luckily for me there's a seminar this weekend at the outdoor store that tends to snag my money-kittery trading post, and is specific to maine hunting although I hope it doesn't end up being just a demo for what they sell,I think what we have up here are coydogs if that makes a difference in hunting them Qaz,thanks again -tt

There are coy-dogs around, but not many. Reasons being that a male coyote cannot breed year round like a dog, but come in season like the females and prefer to pair, so it`s very rear that a male coyote will breed a dog. Since male dogs can breed year round they are always ready to breed a female coyote, but the big problem here is that the female coyote will stay in the den for a good while after the pups are born and the male will bring her food. If she does not get feed she will eat the pups and leave the den. The most likely way coy-dog pup will be raised is that a none breeding sister of the mother will bring the female food at the den.
