FIRST HANDI-RIFLE

Ijust puchased my first handirifle, new in the box...its the 30/30 in wood...I was pleased to find one with the schnabel forearm, and its also an ejector.I put medium leupold rings on it, and an inexpensive 4x scope....should be well as a brush gun,also as a  teaching gun for my nephew...I hunt near raleigh,nc...the deer a smallish and most are less then 100yds...anyway, Ive got a couple of 06's to back her up if the distances get longer..Im gonna try the o-ring under the forearm...It reminds me so much of my iver johnson shotgun that i learned to hunt with...anyway, glad i finally found one..

Welcome and congratulations on your Handi purchase.   :)

You certainly selected a good one in the .30-30.  They are a natural in the Handi.  Most .30-30's shoot well out of the box.  You may want to fire it first before making any modifications.

Remington Core Locts 150's would be a good place to start with ammo.  ;)

Welcome to the board.
I don't know if it's true or not, but my Daddy used to say, and he was a Game Warden in Indiana, that the "old 30-30 has killed more deer than any other rifle." Like I say, don't know if it's true or not. But at the ranges your going to be shooting it's definitely a good round. Best of luck with it.

Welcome and congratulations on your first Handi.
If you reload you can greatly extend the range by going to the Nosler Ballistic Tip or similar bullet. You will have to choose one that will work with the velocity of your handloads.
If you don't reload Hornady's leverevelution ammo will extend the range over the other factory loads put you will pay quite a bit more for this performance.
As EVOC ONE suggested the Remington Core-Lokt bullets are hard to beat in the 30-30, I happen to prefer the 170 grain because that is what my gun likes best. This ammo is cheap enough to buy a box of the 150's and the 170's and let your rifle decide what it likes.

Welcome aboard rebel57 and as has been said you made a great choice for your first Handi. Also if you relaod you have many spitzer bullets available and if you don't you have the Honda Leverloution ammo. Don't cut the 30-30 short for long shots if loaded properly, as you can using this fine gun....<><...:)

AZHoosier, I also have heard what you father said about the 30-30 and told my son the same thing. I believe it was true when he said it and believe it to be true today. My sons first deer gun was and still is a 30-30, and it has served him very well. It is more about proper shot placement with a capable gun, ammo, and shooter than an enormous amount of power in a magnum by a poor sportsman or poor shot, and the 30-30 is completely capable for your needs and the needs of most of the deer hunters in this country, and all of the deer hunters on the east coast....<><....:)

Amen Brother. Use what does the job "PROPERLY". Power has it's place and occasion but the super powers don't match the small deer at close ranges. In Arizona, your talking a different story usually. Especially in the desert areas. You need long range as a rule. In the mountains and the pines, that is again another story. But!!!! No need for 4K fps if 2500 will do the same thing without the huge damage of the heavy loads. My motto is as that of the U.S. Marine Corps Sniper...... One shot, one kill. This happens only when placed in the proper location. It doesn't have to be heavy and fast. Just sufficient will do. Yes I'm a fanatic about it!!!

rebel 57, I use a Topper type H&R single shot and think the world of it for whitetail hunting. You made a good choice. These guys here will all chip in to let you know more than you may want to hear about the 30-30 handi.

Just remember that if the women don't find ya handsome, at least they'll find ya with a handi.
