Wisdom of used barrels ?
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:09:37 AM »
I see in the classifieds many used barrels available and I am very curious.
Since the H&R company requires each receiver to be sent in for fitting
to each new barrel unlike Thompson Contender, how is it that guys can
be swapping and buying used barrels off other H&R guns ?
Is the situation actually much like the Thompson Contender gun where
there is no difference from gun to gun and the H&R company is just
being extra cautions.... perhaps at the insistance of attorneys?

A second hand barrel may or may not fit, each barrel is individually fitted to the frame at the factory, so they aren't one size fits all, if it doesn't fit, you can fit it yourself using the barrel fitting info in the FAQs, you may also have the option of sending it to H&R for them to fit it for $25 plus the cost to get it there, but there's no guarantee that they'll be able to fit it. If it locks up loose on the frame they won't, but if it won't lock up, there's a good chance they can.

You see, what you do is if the used barrel doesn't fit, you turn around and re-sell it until you find one that locks up perfectly!

Seriously though, it takes a little bit of practice to get the fit right, but once you do one, the next is a breeze!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Yeap the chance of it fitting is pretty good, and if you have more than 1 frame it's even better. But if not then they aren't too hard to fit up for the most part. Good tips in the FAQs as Tim mentioned.

I'm not up to Tim's standards yet, I only have 16 of the blamed things-plus 3 shotguns!  I just play musical barrels til I get one to lock up right.  I've only had one that I had to do anything to to make it tighten up, the FAQ list makes it all do-able.  Good luck.
