Rugar MK II ?
« on: January 19, 2008, 02:41:03 PM »
Had one I thought was a good shooter in .243 I missed a turkey with it, then couldn't get a 4 " group at the bench. I tried everything ,gave up had it rebarreled to .358 Winchester
I liked the rifle it felt good and was light.  I'm thinkinng of trying it again but I'm not sure ?
Have you guys had any accuracy problems with Rugar rifles ? and what do you think of them in general ?

I think a lot is internet myth personally. Ive got one in 30-06 and 300mag. The best group ive ever shot was with the 06 and it was .5 in group at 100yds. Ive shot a .75 also but im not going to BS you and tell you it does that consistently. I avg 1.25 -1.5 at 100yds. measured c-c. Ive gone and shot 3 -3shot groups back to back that were barely over an inch. The 300 is about a 1.5 shooter. I did shoot a perfect triangle at 200yds that was 2in exactly but after about 20rds the recoil starts breaking me. They have shot as good as my other centerfires Savage and remmy.

I have a 243 mk 1 tang saftey that shoots pretty well. With the right ammo, she stays well within 1 inch all day. I have to say, however, that the problem above sounds more like a scope problem than a rifle problem. You stated that you thought that she was a shooter which means that she shot well for you at least once before. That shouldnt change out of a cold barrel unless the barrel was damaged. Are you sure that it wasn't a scope issue?

Accuracy problems with Ruger rifles?  Not me.  I have had 4 77MKII's.  I gave the Ultralite 30.06 to one of my son-in-laws - is a good shooter.  I still have a .308 stainless/syn which gives me 3/4" groups with Hornady 150 gr. SST factory ammo, a .308 RSI, and a 6.5X55 which shoot tight groups that I have not measured very precisely, or at least cannot remember right now..  I intend to shoot the RSI and Swede a lot more and reload more after I retire and have great expectations.  After watching my friend shoot (5 shot, not 3 shot) .25 groups with his bone stock 77VT .25-06 (reloads), I have ordered a 77VT .308.   To be honest, I think Ruger 77 MkII's are the "sleepers" amongst factory stock rifles - much better than most people realize.
Ruger's triggers have been much maligned and I have read 10# and 15# pull weights howled about on the internet.  Mine all measured 6 to 6.5 lbs when I got them, and they were by no means terrible or unuseable.  I happen to like Timney triggers, so mine all have Timney's set at 3# or slightly less, but the Ruger factory trigger can be touched up very easily and successfully.  Some rifles benefit from some tweaking with the barrel channel - pressure at the tip or free-floating are common tweaks.  The new Hawkeye trigger is said to be much improved, and the VT two stage trigger sure feels good to me as is.
In general, there is nothing about the Ruger design and construction that I don't like - even though I do think the trigger can be improved upon.  Floor plate design, safety, bolt design, excellent scope ring system, wide selection of styles, chamberings, materials, and reasonably priced - I think the Ruger 77 MKII is far more than worth a little tweaking if needed.
I think read where Jon Sundra said that if he were designing a rifle, it would be the same as a Ruger 77. I pretty much agree with him.

I have a Stainless MK II 243 Win that love 55 grain ballistic tips, it want to shoot them in one little ragged hole. I also have a Ruger Tang Safety heavy Barrels that is a Shooter also.

I had a Ruger M77 All-weather model stainless and synthetic, chambered in 243Win that was accurate with the 100 grain bullets but sold it to my S-I-L since all the kids have moved out and moved on to bigger rifles.  He uses it for a varmint rifle and handloads 58 grain Hornady V-Max bullets for it.  I went to the range with him the other weekend and he asked me to shoot the 243 loaded with the 58s.  I shot a five shot group into one ragged hole at 100 yds.  He has changed out the trigger for a Timney and put a Sims deresonator rubber sleeve on the barrel.  BTW, I thought that accordion looking sleeve was a joke until I saw how his grous shrank from .75" down into almost too small to measure.

I had an all weather 270 a few years ago that shot factory loads at about 1-1/2 to 2".  I could get a little better with handloads.  I sold the gun (dumb).
Last week I bought another one just like it.  After re-educating myself on how to shoot a heavy trigger, I was able to get a 4 shot group at 1" with cheap Win PP's.  I just installed a Timney trigger and can't wait to try it out.
I really like Ruger MKII's.  They are great hunting rifles.  This one has the matte finish and I think it looks awesome.
