50 caliber sabot & .458 bullet

The link posted here is the only source I could find for this sabot. Any experiences to share using .458 bullets with this sabot in a modern in line? Some pointed bullets would provide some improved trajectories at longer ranges along with greater impact velocity.

If anyone made reasonably priced pointed .458" bullets, I'd be using them in the 45-70!! Hornady already makes .452" spitzer muzzleloading bullets in 250gr and 300gr that aren't too expensive, about $.50 each with sabots, Barnes 300gr TSX .458" are about $1 each. You could load the 150gr collar buttons in the .458" sabots tho, dunno how they'd do at long range tho.

Thanks for the info Quick. The Hornadys look like a realistic option. I have also been looking at bullet molds that cast pointed bullets in the 375 and 500 grain offerings. I have heard that cast bullets do not always work with sabots, I may have to experience this for myself.

It would be nice to shoot my 45/70 bullets thru my ML. But man them hornady ssts shoot pretty good.

I've shot the Lyman 457122 sized to .452" in sabots in a .50 Cal Cabelas Sporter, they were accurate, and being a hollow point, should have very good terminal performance when cast with soft lead which is all I ever used since most of my lead was for round balls. Never got a chance to try em on game tho , but from what I've read, it's very popular in the 45-70, so it should be good in muzzleloaders too.

Another sptizer muzzleloader bullet are the Precision Rifle cast bullets, I thought PR use to be a GBO sponsor, although they're not on the list now, they also offer .45 cal spitzer conicals.

Best buy I've found on the Hornady is at Cabelas, TC Shockwaves are the same bullet with different colored tips.

I have been shooting .458's for several years now.  I shoot the Nosler Partition .458/300 grain Protectected Point in the MMP sabot.  It is an excellent shooter - this is my elk bullet, I shoot Hornady .458/300 grain at paper they are more affordable.  I have harvested two elk with this bullet.  A 5 pt bull several years ago and a 470# cow this year.  The bullet does an awesome job.

Hello Cheesehead, I've been shooting .458" bullets out of my Savage 10ML-II for several years now and have taken quite a few whitetails with them. I have mainly used the 300 grain Remington JHP 45-70 bullet but have also used the 405 grain Remington JFP 45-70 bullet to take deer.
My sabots are Knight orange designed for the .458" bullets to be used in a 50 caliber muzzleloader. These sabots are in packs of 50 and I don't remember where I got my first pack but after shooting them I knew I had to get some more. I called Del Ramsey, owner of MMP sabots and spoke with him, he seems like a really great guy, he told me that he made those orange Knight sabots but Knight hadn't ordered any in a long time. I asked if he could make some for me and he said that he couldn't because Knight owned the dies and he could get in BIG trouble if he made them. He also told me that the dies were very expensive and that you could buy a very nice car for what the dies cost. Del told me to call Natchez and see if they had the orange sabots, I did and ordered 400 of them. I bet Del bought the dies from Knight and is now making them under his own MMP brand.
I have always liked using these bullets over the .45 pistol bullets because the velocities that we shoot them at out of a muzzleloaders are more in line with the 45-70.

Cheese, You have to remember that my rifle is a Savage Model 10 ML-II, and that is is designed to shoot smokeless powder.
My hunting load for this rifle uses a Winchester 209 primer, a Knight Orange sabot, a Remington .458" 300 grain JHP bullet and 42 (Forty Two) grains of IMR SR-4759 powder.
I just looked through my chronograph records and found this load gives me 2100 fps.

I am casting the 500 grain Lee .458, sizing it to .451 (three step process, .458 to .455, .455 to .452 and finally to .451) and shooting it in a .50 Encore using Harvester sabot. My accuracy isn't real good yet, only 3" group at 50 yards. Still playing around with slight bevel on the base of the bullet, varying the powder charge, etc.

Del has since purchased those dies from Knight and MMP does now offer that sabot in their HPH line of sabots.
