handgonne pea shooter
« on: January 20, 2008, 03:01:10 PM »
I have read about handgonnes on several occasions and love anything that throws lead. Well our factory all ways has a plumber and electrician on sight even when no one else works. last night was one of those nights. So after doing my checks I have a couple hours to kill  add a full machine shop all to myself  I took a grade 5.3/4 bolt  and started  tinkering I ended up turning the head down boring the bore 5/16th" x3 1/2" deep drilled a 9/16th"x1 1/4" socket for a tiller and drilled a touch hole and a dimple for a flash  pan the gonne is 5 1/4 long  I plan on using #2 buckshot but since Icouldn't find any today ,ilooked my junk over for  projectiles.found some ball bearing the right size  figured with light loads they would work  ended up with 15 grains of fffg cotton patch  and used an incense stick for a match It was o cold to try to actually hit something but had some fun and made some noise

the knife is 110 buck for size referece

That's super-cool!

We've had micro-mortars and firecracker cannon, but I think this is the first micro-gonne.

i carry the same knife

Me too. I carry either the Buck or a Schrade 'Sharpfinger' depending on whether I want a folder or a fixed-blade knife.

I need to get a photo of my micro-mortar with the Buck for scale.

And yeah, I need a micro-gonne to go with my .50 cal.

bore ended up at .307 I was limited to the bits I had in my tools  I reckon thats what you get when you leave a gun nut plumber alone with a lathe ;D ;D ;D

You can buy fuse through the mail. I use CannonFuse.com

(I'm assuming you are in the U.S.A.)

They ship fast but fuse can be sent via surface mail only, so expect to wait about a week for shipping.

There are some board sponsors that make ball molds. You can find them in the stickies at the top of the page.

I bought the 1.125" mold that I use for my ¼-scale Napoleon from J-T Moulds in the U.K., but that was a few years ago and I'm not sure if he is still making molds.

(Those handles are for a six-cavity bullet mold.)

If you can figure out which weight you need, cannonball sinkers can be often be used as projectiles.

If you do find a size that works, sinker molds are cheaper than dedicated ball molds. But you will want to make a ball gauge and check each one for roundness. Inexpensive sinker molds can't reproduce the quality of a good ball mold.

My handgonne is only a .50, but there are other members here that have gonnes up to golfball caliber.

I need a bigger gonne (and a smaller one).

I don't have any microgonnes or micro mortars or buck or shrade knives. I carry a Swiss Army Knife and and a Super Leatherman tool. I'll leave the bucks, shrades, and micro stuff to you gize.

I have 6 or so Buck knives, two of which are the 110's. Also a bunch of other knives and bayonets.

I really didn't  mean to start something :o I was just showing off my toy  I have not posted on this board but  I'm a regular on some of the other board s here at gbo  Yes I have  a sharpfinger too  plus  a swiss army knife   ;D after cleaning it up the bigger gonne  will take a steel ball bearing I have that measures .810 so and .800 lead ball with patch should work and some one on the reference list sell that size next one I make will take a standard size ball
Roy
I did a proof load firing today  240 grains of fffg w/3 steel ball bearing gun survived with no stress signs  [took measurements at several places before and after ] how ever the tiller did not survive the test  it was a handle of unknowns origins and mistery wood It now has a hickory shovel handle as a tiller   I need to dill the touch hole bigger to accept fuse easier  and make a dimple for a flash pan

YUP, PbRoy, you started something.

It's OK too.

THE standard has been a powder can, usually but not always GOEX.

But you've introduced an alternate standard that is instantly recognizable and understood for a comparison for size.

GOOD JOB!

240 grains FFFG and 3 x .810" steel balls? That's a hefty load. I'm not surprised that the stick broke (I'd say that's a "stress sign" right there). What material is it made from and what is the wall thickness at the chamber?

the gonne has  a 1/2x5/8 powder chamber  and is 1.5 dia in the breech area tapering to 1.25 at muzzle I measured it at three points before and after it did not expand it at all the stock I had on it that broke was a mop handle that I was suspect of to start with  I plan on firing it w about 40-50 grain of powder regularly I don't remember the number of the steel type  but itis one of the better grades of steel we had in the shop
I have a peice of steel 1.5x10 drilled 8.24 deep x.580 ?

Yes, Jeff Tanner of the UK is still making his inexpensive brass molds. Workmanship is great, but no sprue cutter. (Do you really need one ?) Emery

.. no sprue cutter. (Do you really need one ?)

When casting with wheelweight alloy, the sprues usually break off on their own.
