Yeah,Ya have to take the load data with a grain of salt! I all ways start low and work up at the best group,or first sign of pressure I back it off. The same company's contradict them selves in their data. Also what is a good load in one gun,is a high pressure in another gun. Ron

What scopes are you guys using on your hornets? I use a Burris Fullfield 3X9X40 Ballistic plex for hunting. For paper punching I use a BSA (el cheapo) 4X16X40. Ron

I have a Mueller APV 4.5 - 14 on my model 40, Bushnell Banner 4 - 12 on my Handi SL and a 3X Thompson Center on my 10" T/C 22 Hornet

Just picked up my M40 today. I fitted a Nikon Monarch 3/9*40, seems like a great scope for this rifle. I was amazed at how far apart the mounts were, almost like a long action!! Took me 3 sets of rings till I could actually fit the scope, it isn't a long scope for such long mounts! I have to say I love the rifle though, real ,low recoil, not loud and just a hoot to shoot. I only shot Prvi Partizan ammo, very cheap and accuracy was still 1.5" at worst, so I'm confident it'll shoot well with better ammo. This is an all round fun gun!

A 9 power scope is plenty for the Hornet. If you can not see them at 9 power you are shooting way too far. The scopes I have on the rifles go above 9X, but that is what I have them set for to sight in and hunt with. BTW the Monarch is a very good piece of glass and the Burris ain't too shabby either.

LaOtto222 ,Have ya got the 50's working yet? I just got some Sierra 40gr. Varmiter Hp's in yesterday. They shoot right with the V-Max 40gr. bullets, but allot cheaper (11.30) per box. I did get to run some loads through the crono last Sat. The pistol primers do indeed, reduce the velocity spread, and increase the velocity about 20fps. Ron

I am on hold right now. I have a Lee FCD on order and it should be here early next week.  I got the 50 grain Mid South bullets to shoot decently. I could group two together, but a 3rd one would be out about 2" at 50 yards. I did get a couple of groups in the .4 range at 50 yards, but no consistency. I hope that the crimp die will help with the fliers. ;) I still like what I have seen with the Rem 1 1/2 primers so far. I can not seem to get the 40 grain V Max bullet to shoot very well. After I get the crimp die, maybe I will try them again. I do have 100 35 Grain V Max and 100 33 grain Speer bullets coming too to try out.

Yeah,I think the "light" crimp is the factor that made mine(and all of my friends) Hornets start shooting very accurate. Infact I ran a little test, shooting the same bullet/powder/primer in two diffrent test, with half crimped, and the other half not crimped. Both times the crimped load showed allot better accuracy. I loaded some 35gr. V-max bullets, and got them to shoot ok,but never reached the factory load accuracy with them. Never tried the Small TNT's. I've shot the 50gr. TNT's and have had great success with them in both the Hornet, and the .223. Let us know how they do. Ron

i have a bushnell 4-12x40 AO scope on mine for now. plan on changing it to a konus 3-12x50 AO this summer. as for the crimp - i dont crimp the loads for mine, i may have to try it and see what happens. it will be hard to shrink the groups much further in mine but ill give it a shot.

Ron,do you full length resize,or neck size the brass? I've noticed that when I full lenght size the bullet seats much tighter, but when neck sizing it isn't as tight. Ron

I am not Ron but; I have a Lee collet neck sizer that I am using. I noticed that it does not make the necks as tight as the full length die. I though that might be why a crimp would help - just not enough neck tension.

Sorry to stick my nose in - Please answer this Ron

i neck size using the lee collet die. i have had one or 2 "light tension" sizings but that was my fault and not the dies. wasnt paying close enough attention to how much presure i was putting on the press. other than that i have had no problems. ill have to try crimping next time i load up some v-maxes and see how it does. if there is no change or they get tighter ill start doing it with all my hornet reloads.

Yeah,I noticed a difference in the bullet seating pressure, between the FL/and neck sizing dies. The FL die defiantly, squeezes the necks tighter. I just turned the mandrel down in the neck die a short while ago. Took off .001 seems to tighten up the tension some. I need to get out and give it a test (weather permitting). Ron

While shooting this week end,I noticed a slight diffrence in the loads with the necks tighter. The big eye opener was the velocity spread using the Li Gun powder :o. I got an avarage SD of 63fps. I can't see how this powder shoots so well, with a standard deviation like that. The speed is up there, but so is the spread. I then tried another powder,H110. I started out with 10grs. and worked up to the listed max 11.2. I never seen the first indication of any high pressure through the whole string of loads. What I did see was a slightly lower speed,2831fps,but with a SD of 9fps. I think I may have found a new powder! I'll do a little more shooting this week, and see how it goes. By the way the starting load (10)grs. was extreemly accurate @ 100yds. Sierra list this as their accuracy load, and five shots later, there was just one tiny little group in the target. Ron

Sounds like I have the exact same results as everyone else.  The M-40 is just an awesomely fun and accurate rifle to shoot.  I talked my buddy into getting one, as I was getting one myself, back in March 2007, for $274 each.  We mounted Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14's on them, with Warne rings.  The first load combo we tried was, Winchester cases, Lil Gun powder, Hornady 40gr V-Max's, and Federal small rifle primers.  We loaded these to an COAL of 1.835" just long enough to clear the ejection/loading port, but way short to engage the lands (1.910" to lands).  I was a little disappointed that I had to load them so far off the lands, but it is, what it is.  Anyway, using the Wilson dies, with a .241" neck bushing to neck size only, I loaded test rounds starting at 11.0gr and worked up to 13.0gr in .2gr increments.

Proof was in the shooting, of two 5 shot groups of each test load, per rifle.  The very first groups were right around an inch in both rifles.  The higher the charges we shot, the tighter the groups got, not much tighter but, tighter none the less.  By the time we got to the 12.8gr loads, we were getting groups either at or barley above the .5" mark.  At 13.0gr, the results were my buddies was at the low .4" and mine was at the very low .5" mark.  His shot about .070" tighter groups than mine at first, but after about 200+ rounds, mine has caught his in accuracy, as the barrel on mine is starting to break in good.  I haven't tried any new load combo's as this load shoots so good, I don't really see the need to look any further, since that load shoots so well.

Man, this little gun has became one of my favorite to shoot.  Out to 200yds or so, no crow, yote, fox, or bobcat is safe.
