The 38-40 in a '92 Best load?
« on: July 01, 2003, 12:52:36 AM »
I just aquired pieces of a '92 Winchester in 38WCF (38-40) .
Anyone with experience on what shoots best
Close range hunting is an objective, so heavier bullets are my guess.
Factory loads are pathetic!

John :  In the cartridges of the world they show a few loads since you said heavy bullets I will list the 2 200gr. loads and if you want the ones for 180 I can give also:  Unique 8.4gr vel. 1000 energy 444ftlb and the other one is 2400 13.5gr 1050 energy 490fp BTW the factory load was 180 gr at 1160 fps and energy of 538fp winchester. :D    JIM

Thanks Jim, I'm trying to gather all the data I can, for when I get this thing together. All I need now is the bolt Assy, one pin, and one screw.

John Y:  go to the Lyman 43rd or 45th edition for relaods for the 38-40.  Some of them really smoke from the rifle or carbine.  What you experience today is either a 'liability loading' or a cowboy low, both of which make the caliber almost useless.  Mikey.
