I have 2 Bushnell Banners; and, while I agree they're a very good scope for the money, I wouldn't go so far as to call the clarity fabulous. Next to my Nikon Buckmaster or Burris Fullfield II, it's clear (pun intended) the Nikon and Burris have better resolution and a sharper, clearer image. Most noticable is the distortion around the outer edge of the Banner's image. I'm not trying to badmouth the Banners. Like I said, I've got 2 and like them. But if I had $1,000 to invest in a scope, I'd look at other models. This list is by no means inclusive, but I'd consider Bushnell's 3200 or 4200 lines, Nikon Monarchs, and Leupold VX-IIIs. There are plenty of other good choices.
On a 6.5 Swede I'd be leaning towards anything between 2-7X and 4-12X. I can't see much need for a 50mm objective on a hunting rifle. In low light, dial a 40mm down to a lower magnification and you've got more available light than you can use. Why put up with those high mounts and heavy scopes if you don't need 'em?
