Will I go to he-ell-ell for doing this?
« on: January 21, 2008, 09:03:40 AM »
I think of hog hunting as a handgun pursuit, but I'm dying to hunt them with my rifle. Would it be OK if I used my 375 H&H on a hog hunt? Would this be a mortal sin?

Only if you kill the outfitters prize hunting dog which was a mile behind the hog. ;D

Watch out for the flinch factor, if ya miss you'll never hear the end of it!!

PS. I built a 45-70 Contender carbine specifically for a hog hunt but have yet to go. Don't tell anybody or I'll put the pistol grip back on. Since you're paving new highway make us proud!  ;D

I took a friend of my brothers out on a spotlight hunt one night and he was shooting a 375 H&H. The first hog he shot at fell over dead. We think from the concussion or heart attack as we could not find a bullet hole on it, BUT it was dead non the less LOL. The second hog was a small 100 pounds or so an we could not find much of it once he shot. Dunno what he was shooting. Just know the loads were hand loads. When he shot the gun the roof of the truck sounded like it was being peeled off LOL. Good luck with the 375 just aim for the big hogs LOL.

The ranch I have hunted and am going to hunt this spring has gone to NO, repeat No lead and my first thought was to use some 300 grain Monolith Solids out of my 375 this year.
Everything I have read by Capstick and others about Africa the 375 is perfect for everything from Dik Dik to Cape Buffalo.  A lot of wart hogs are shot with it.  The heavy construction of the bullet makes soft points expand on big heavy game and just sail right through smaller game.  I would use the 270 grain soft points by Remington.  Good construction and not too fast.  Heck the exit wound of a 375 that didn't expand is the same as a .30-30 that has.
A guy on the ranch shot a pig with his 416 and they did not have much of the front half of the pig.  My guess is to shoot a little farther away and aim for the boiler room.
Your other option is to reload and down load the gun to a very hot 375 Win.  The smaller bullet (235 grain) may have the opposite effect and explode on contact as they were not designed for those speeds on a close shot.
Good luck.

Using a rifle is just fine....it just has to be an air rifle firing handgun projectiles is all.

Not as long as I can go with my 50 Alaskan.

Just let me know when you are ready for one and I'll get you on the list for a real sweet custon one.  I also have a spot open for the airgun hog hunt in Oklahoma this May; there are 5-6 of us going right now and we are accepting one more deposit at this time.

You will be fine with the .375. Don't be surprised, however, if he runs 50 or so yards. My hog hunting guy has seen literally thousands of hogs shot says you are NEVER
over gunned. Though when I used a .338 to down some javalinas, that may have been too much.  ::)

Mohawk, you are right, you can never be over-gunned. About 10 yrs. ago I center punched a hog with a .270 and 130  Partition. Driving sleet, almost dark and off it went into 6800 acres of Tx. brush. Finally caught up with it,off it went again and I hit it in the rear this time. As I approached it whirled and tried to crawl toward me, this time a .45 ended it. I know, initial lousy shooting but with sleet stinging my face it was the best I could do. By the way, this was a "massive" 115# sow! So I obtained a used Ruger 77 .458 and it has been my hog rifle ever since, even with a good shot the bigger boars will run but with a 400 grain Speer in them not as far into that heavy brush. And the big boars hardly ever leave a blood trail so I say hit them hard. Last year a friend shot a bull elk thru the shoulder with a 7mag., bang-flop. About a month later he shot a decent boar (about 175-200#) on my place with my 8mm Rem. mag. and it ran about 50 yds. after a 185 gr. Core-Lokt destroyed it's heart. Only slivers of the bullet exited, again with no blood trail. This was his first hog, to say he was surprised would be an understatement! And no, I never try the head shot, friends have found teeth on the ground; it's just not for me.  Kix.
