Cutting a Model 700 barrel
« on: January 21, 2008, 01:14:37 PM »
All,
I was thinking of buying a new 700 in 35 whelen but don't want a 24" barrel.  What can I expect to pay to cut the barrel down to 18-20" and recrown?  Or would it be even worth it? Any input would be appreciated.

I happen to own a Rem m700 CDL in 35 Whelen with its 24" barrel.  It is pretty lively off the bench, mine will stay as is.  I had a smith cut and recrown a Savage 11g in .260 rem from 22" to 20" and reposition the front sight. That cost about $25.00.  You can cut it yourself like I did to a Yugo SKS.  I cut it with a Dremmel rotary tool with a cut off disks, files, emery paper then touched up with reblue with good results.

There has been many a barrel cut off with nothing more than a hacksaw and a file. A barrel doesn't have to be crowned but you can send off to Brownell's and get a bronze crowning tool that fits in a drill to use with rubbing compound. (a carriage bolt head will work too)
To answer your question, it should be @$50.00. A quick call to a smith should confirm.  Why not have a go at it as a winter project at 20" and if you screw it up, have the smith cut it to 18".   ;D
As always, I suggest trying it out before making any major changes. ;)
